It’s still in use, mainly as internally displaced persons who are still within their country.
Ukraine did take a small number of Syrian refugees. Welp, they’re screwed.

I must stress how in Russia or Ukraine, even most of Europe, POC are not treated as well as their lighter-skinned brethren. In fact, it’s racism that drives much of the fascist state politics. I’ve seen it firsthand in eastern Europe, and even here in Mexico.

I just want to point out that if you’re spending time engaging here, or listening to music, or reading fiction, or binge watching a show, or helping out at a bake sale to raise money for a local shelter, it doesn’t mean those things “take precedence” over looming global war. Just like if you’re marching for, discussing or raising money for anti-racist programs, it’s not to the exclusion of paying attention to looming global catastrophe.
Yeesh, some people must be so lucky, to be able to pay attention to only one issue at a time.

There’s no zero sum here. You can respect and admire the sheer badassery of the Ukrainian people and their resistance to Russian occupation without resorting to racist tropes or denying/downplaying the similarly badass struggles of others.
And to comrade @QuickBrownFox this also means it’s possible to have Concerns about multiple things at once.

We in the West have a neo-Nazi problem that stems all the way back to Operation Paperclip. Our racist wars have murdered millions of people since 2003, and we actively arm and fund extremist groups in order that they be used against our ‘enemies’.
Rich white middle-class people of either of the two socially-acceptable political persuasions, who should really know better on the basis of those so-called PhD’s and diploma’s bandied about with such casual flair, frankly, suddenly waking up to this fact isn’t going to change anything - but it is finally good to see the Boingboing crew gaining an understanding for just how insidious things can get when you believe, too strongly, in your own moral authority.
The Nazi’s escaped, and the ideology infected the CIA, where it has been fermenting for decades and which led to countless racist wars being fought in the name of “White, Western States” everywhere. Don’t act all surprised. This is OUR doing.
