If you already know this, great - please ensure that everyone else in your life is informed about it, too: Casual racism leads to real racism, always.

Have you been reading this site and its comment section over the past six years?

I’m sure a history professor who spends a lot of her time teaching students about racist sub-cultures in her focus area was just waiting to hear this advice and startling insight.

Uhh, it wasn’t the Nazis that infected the “West”, theirs was just a heavily refined version of the white supremacist rhetoric created to justify imperialism and colonialism, and they had no shortage of sympathizers in the US and UK.

The racist, imperialist reasons we invade and fund wars outside europe, and the excuses we make for it, are all home grown.

Plenty of rich white middle class people right now in the US openly talk about how “the nazis got some things right” and have been talking about whatever “the jews” are conspiring to do since before my grandmother was born. There are some things in the middle american subconscious that would make Hitler blush too.

Also I think publicly AND privately it would do a lot of good if people worked to stop this shit in their own homes and communities too.

Oh, you know, it’s somehow okay to bomb the desert wastelands, but not places where there are things like beautiful

Racism is obviously the main thing, but I do also think that people who’ve never travelled to some of those places and seen what they were like prior to being war-torn really do think Afghanistan is nothing but a country of dry mountain caves and Syria is a desert with no infrastructure.

Oh yeah… I mean, I believe that Syria has one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the planet?

What are you even talking about? This is, like, pretty much all anyone talks about here.

You came into this thread swinging and clearly trying to pick a fight, but the people here are not your enemy. There’s no “clueless ivory tower intelligentsia smug in moral authority” here. That’s a patently bizarre straw man to level at happy mutants. We’re a mix of people from all over the world of every colour and all the queers and everything else you might find in a cross-section of humanity’s giant jawbreaker. We discuss at exhausting length the issues you are clearly concerned about every single day in practically every thread here and have done so since long before I started lurking ten years ago.

But how do I know that you’re not a hidden Nazi doing a false flag post? “People who post here are all sus and clueless” includes everyone.

Why are you accusing the Boingboing crew of believing too strongly in their own moral authority? What’s your evidence for that charge?

For those in here who don’t know quite how many Ukrainians there are in Canada. Just under 4% of the total population. Around 1.3 million. (Based on 2016 data)
US data is about 1 million or 0.3 percent.

So you’re fine with many racist/fascist/immoral laws on the books simply because “it’s law”? :man_shrugging:

ETA: I mean, this is exactly the problem with Q-nuts believing they are “supporting” the Constitution as if it’s written in stone, when it’s a legal framework that can be amended.

2 out of the oldest 10, in fact, in terms of continuous inhabitation.
And it turns out being the cradle of civilization imparts a lot of history on a place.

And then for instance Antioch is a much younger city, founded by one of Alexander’s generals…so a comparative baby, only seven times as old as the USA.

So … good thing Putin is going to “de-Nazify” everything then?

What, like, the whole war?

What does this even mean?

The discussion - and horror over - the use of that particular bomb was focusing on the terrible injuries it inflicts. So the double standard is 100% about who it’s being used against, not where it’s being used.

Oh, thanks for the clarification. I didn’t recognize the name of the bomb and am happy not to have had to look it up
That makes the statement…I can’t even think of the right ratio to describe how much worse that makes it.
