Malaysia blames quake on naked selfie tourists, some of whom now can't go home

This from Kellies Castle in Ipoh. I wish I knew which obscene acts they had in mind though.

OBSENE, not obscene.

Robert Sapinggi is dead. Not only did he leave his wife and infant child, but he died doing what he loved, which was make sure that the people who visited the place that was central to his life and livelihood were safe and sound.

Speaking of livelihood, since the climbs have been suspended for three weeks while the rescue efforts continue, and further assessments are madeā€¦ the other guidesā€™ livelihoods are going to suffer. The infrastructure was never meant to stand earthquakes, since, you know, the last fucking earthquake was in fucking in11996, i.e. 20 fucking years ago. Theyā€™re starting a donation run for the guides, who all have families to feed, but thatā€™s not newsworthy enough.

No. Whatā€™s newsworthy is the LOLOL stupid brown people and their LOLOL stupid brown superstitions, and of course, the plight of such upstanding citizens like this fella. Right? OH MY GODDD LOOK AT THOSE DUM DUM TALIBAN SUBHUMANS NOT LETTIN ME GO TAWAU IS A SHITHOLE MALAYSIANS ARE ALL BROWN NAZI FASCIST SCUM.

I grew up across the street from Uncle Adnan, Xeni. I remember saying to him, ā€œEh Uncle Adnan, you dah Internet famous eh?ā€ and he looking bemused. Does your brother remember Adnan Othman, or was he another joke to you and your kind?

The English is pretty good, all considering. Better than my Malay, anyway.

Under Malaysiaā€™s Section 377A of the Penal Code, fellatio is considered ā€œcarnal intercourse against the law of natureā€. So if what youā€™re planning isnā€™t missionary, itā€™s safe to assume itā€™s probably obscene ā€¦

How laughably presumptuous. Iā€™m a naturally occurring animal, and both am able to perform, and enjoy fellatio, as well as have it performed on me. So obviously such an act is in no way against the so-called ā€œlaw of natureā€. Nature allows me to do it. So it must not be against the law.

It sounds to me like the Malaysian government are the ones who have a problem with it. Theyā€™re just using nature in a pathetic and transparent attempt to try and prop up their own unreasonable disgust, and their thin-skinned attempt at prohibiting a totally natural act they donā€™t like.

Its probably a law left over from British occupation. Certainly Malaysia is a but prudish, but it is more liberal than most other Islamic nations.

That seems like a really low bar to step over.

What do you expect in a majority muslim country? Just get a room and donā€™t be loud about it. The ban is rarely enforced anyway ā€¦

Well, there goes my weekendā€¦

Edit: Ah, the joke doesnā€™t work unless itā€™s clear that I was referencing the link to ā€œIslamic views on oral sex.ā€ Iā€™ll just see myself outā€¦

Another reading of the story:

ignorant, because uncurious, because spoiled (and probably slightly intoxicated) white kids ravaging across Asia, trample across local sensitivities, ignore the request of their local guide and generally behave like a**holes. because they can, because they can afford it, because they come from the bit of the world that has won the capitalist race, run according to the very rules they rigged themselves.

I doubt these kids could travel freely out of the Vatican if they happened to decide to expose themselves in front of St Peters Cathedral or that the London authorities would look at them very kindly if they did a similar photo shoot in front of St Pauls.

They of course could decide to make a political statement a la Pussy Riot, but again legal consequences would ensue.

As a mother whose child and whose childā€™s peer group has done the Asian gap year thing, I am mostly very embarrassed at how our kids travel the world and the more and earlier they realise that they donā€™t own this world but are visitors who need to treat it and other people inhabiting it with respect the better for them and all of us. To me there is not such huge ideological step from this completely ignorant behaviour to marching into Iraq to show them how things are really done.

All this said I hope that they are treated according to what we consider universal human rights. Because those really are universal.

I think that we are coming to the crux of the matter now. The Malaysian government fucked up, people died, time to find scapegoats (even if their alleged crimes of ā€œDisrespecting the mountain godsā€ and ā€œcausing earthquakesā€ are not actually codified as crimes). Quick, find some photographs of tourist behaviour from a week earlier that no-one noticed or cared about at the time, whip up some outrage, take the heat off our own venality and incompetence!

So the tourists should have known better than to violate local laws. Even if there were no specific laws that they should have known that they were violating. Even if they are currently held in the country while the authorities try and make something up to charge them with, they still should have known better.

Only one solution to appease the mountain

Itā€™s not the nudity that is shameful. Itā€™s their open defiance of the guide and refusal to respect the local customs and the local peopleā€™s spiritual beliefs that is shameful.

Iā€™m all for nudity when it does not involve people who are guests in a country refusing to refrain from doing something which the local people regard as being offensive to their spiritual beliefs.

Itā€™s sad how many atheist dudebros are in this thread arguing that thereā€™s nothing racist at all about disrespecting other cultures. If you arenā€™t willing to be respectful of other peoples religious sites, donā€™t fucking go to them. Itā€™s pretty goddamn simple.

It is absolutely a sign of racism to go to another cultureā€™s sacred site and do inappropriate things - and absolutely a sign of racism to say that those people need to ā€œget over itā€, or to insult them for being upset at being directly insulted.

White tourists need to stop acting like they have some sort of calling to piss all over other cultures and do whatever they goddamn please, and learn how to have some basic respect and decency. But thatā€™s probably too much to ask.

For angering a mountain? How does it sound in FULL context?

For acting inappropriately at a religious site. If you show complete disrespect for the countryā€™s people, you donā€™t get to whine and cry because they refuse to let you back into their country.

Not the cited reason, friend.
