And with a per capita incarceration rate over five times Canada’s (which has its own problems), there’s something going on other than criminal justice.
Still, those Republican rural districts with prisons do get a population boost, even if the prisoners probably don’t vote.
Yeah - we have a similar situation in Canada as @RickMycroft mentions.
Many of the institutions here were either shutdown or repurposed - probably a good thing given the (likely) stereotypical horror shows they once were.
Sadly it doesn’t seem something better was put in its place - as conventional wisdom at the time tried to better integrate folks into daily life under heavy medication.
I’m no expert but I believe there are cases where everyone would be better off if there were more humane mental health institutions. Something that’s not run like a prison, operated by churches, or acting as a human holding tank.
