You’re quite right! What a para(confession)box! How about this - the guy confesses while holding gun, just as reported, then leaves the absolvatron and immediately “struck by remorse”, comes back in to confess “I just now held a guy at gunpoint and boy, do I feel penitent about that!” The Seal kicks in and no temporo-logical anomalies are created. Beautiful!

I might have given more thought to Catholicism if the confessional was called “the absolvatron”, I must admit.
