I bet he chuckled more at M and Q than he ever did at P.
I think that was always clear - though there was a fan notion that “James Bond” was also a designation / code name.
From what I’ve gathered about this movie, James Bond retires and she takes over as 007, at which point something happens that brings him out of retirement. (The cynic in me thinks that she dies, but Phoebe Waller - Bridge is working on the script so hopefully that’s not the case.) So this isn’t even a big reveal about who’s taking over the role for future “007” movies, it’s just a detail about another spy in that agency.
Unfortunately this indicates nothing about the future movies. (Although, having established a non- white-male as a - temporary - 007, it does create a certain amount of precedent for future James Bond movies…)
As long as we all agree that this is the most kick-ass James Bond movie theme then you can have whatever favourite Bond actor you like.
I do like the Idris Elba, I would like to see that. He plays a pretty cool cat, with a plus - more handsome than Craig.
Chris Cornell did a fine job but I can’t give him the title of “Best James Bond Movie Theme” in any timeline where Shirley Bassey exists.
Then I think we’ll have to act like this isn’t the Internet and agree to disagree like grownups.
At least you didn’t pick Garbage or A-ha or Duran Duran or gods forbid Jack White…
They need a woman writer with a wicked sense of humor.
I heard the same car gets destroyed in two different ways in the various Mad Max films
Big Bond fan since LONG ago. I don’t see the need to reboot him into a woman. Was he sexist and misogynistic? Yes he was.
Then look at say, Atomic Blonde, every bit the spy movie any Bond movie might be with a very strong female lead.
I see more than enough space for everyone without reclaiming characters. Would I watch a movie about a transgender spy? if they kicked ass, yes probably so. I liked the movies about female spies well enough - maybe more.
So yeah I would rather see the franchise just finish and move on rather than be some poll driven entity. I will watch all kinds of spy movies but I would not twist 007 into a woman.

They’ve got that part all handled.
Or to read the actual article or many of the comments about it.
One more time: this new movie isn’t rebooting the James Bond character as a woman. It’s introducing an entirely new character who takes on his code number after he retires from the service.
FFS, this isn’t even the first time they did a “James Bond is retired now” movie.
I heard Vin Diesel can’t even drive.
Rumour has it, he’s actually Premium Unleaded.
TRUE FACT: vin diesel is actually andy serkis wearing a motion-capture suit
Yeah, but who isn’t?
I was particularly amused by someone upset that more recent editions of D&D had included non-white characters in their art, complaining that D&D was about “Medieval Europe” and thus should only have white people in it. I pointed out that a) Medieval Europe most definitely also had non-white people in it, but more importantly b) D&D was explicitly not about Medieval Europe. It was a fantasy based on fantasy fiction (which included non-European settings and non-white characters) and mythology/traditions from around the world and whose real-world references ranged from the Neolithic period to the 19th century.
His given name was “Vin Hybrid-Electric” but his agent advised him that he’d have an easier time selling action movie tickets if he changed it.
Don’t forget the special guest writer who introduces the plotline wherein Bond saves the Queen of Secret England by diving into the path of the diabolical Thixotropic Ray, splitting him into the dichomitic entities of Covalent Bond and Ionic Bond.
