I don’t think that opposing teams can just do anything to disrupt it. It is as disrespectful as doing that to a national anthem and could cause problems. And yes, these days that would include fines…
I don’t like the throat cutting part, and I don’t really think you can make an argument that it needs to be respected culturally and also that others have to sit still for that… but as I said above, it’s an interface issue and precisely how that works is still being worked out. We in the West have established traditions for how you behave to national anthems and they are pretty vile (in most cases) so it’s hypocritical for Westerners to criticise.
I avoid standing for national anthems in any situation I’m pretty sure I won’t be lynched for so (not) doing by the way. And that would probably include if I were an international sportsperson!
To be fair, english is also not my native tongue, and I also associated “speaking in tongues” with glossolalia. It’s really not that big of a leap to assume that was what he tried to say.
There’s been a trend in New Orleans in the past 15 years or so for brass bands. I was in college there before this became a thing, and when I went back to visit I was surprised that people were playing tubas and such indoors. It really blows your hair back to see a brass band inside. It’s a fun kind of music, and nice to see all those kids who are in marching bands going on to do something else with their skills.
This selection is very time appropriate as Mardi Gras is almost here!!!
