I’m sure she’ll forget it again shortly. I don’t think Trump realized it was part of the US either until that time they flew him out there to throw paper towels at hurricane victims.

Republicans have always had a difficult time internalizing the idea that Spanish-speaking people living in the Caribbean could somehow be natural-born American citizens.

On occasion, I wander into a comment section I immediately wished I hadn’t, and the number of people who confidently assert that Puerto Rico is not part of the US and people from Puerto Rico are not US citizens is staggering. It’s a biased sample, but it makes you feel like 90% of schoolchildren in America have failed to learn this basic fact. Or, as you suggested, they don’t want to believe it because (waves hands vaguely) “Spanish and stuff. You know. Damn Furreners not speakin’ proper American! Even when they are.”

Many years ago I worked for a major healthcare company that sold IV solutions and IV drugs. At that time, the US government provided tax incentives for companies to manufacture there. There was a lot of growth and a lot of good jobs. Then the tax incentives were taken away and that hit Puerto Rico hard.

I’m not going to get into weeds on the propriety of the tax breaks or rescinding them, but the US government is not giving tax breaks to companies to manufacture anything in a place that is NOT the United States.

While it is not a state, it is a US territory. They are US citizens. Just like citizens in Washington, D.C.

I’m glad Marge is concerned about the people of Puerto Rico. I guess this means she’ll support statehood, if the majority of Puerto Ricans wish that! Good for her!

I think it needs to be pointed out to Tony “I make fun of everybody” Hinchcliffe that context matters.
Even giving him the benefit of the doubt, and assuming he meant calling Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage” as joke criticising the government and institutions for failing the people who live there - it was delivered alongside racist screeds about filthy immigrants and non-white people “poisoning” American blood.

If he still doesn’t get how context changes things, he should consider:

“We should, Kill Tony.” has one meaning when the last two words are both capitalised and you’re discussing if you should see a comedy show.

But those exact same words have an entirely different meaning if said while sharpening knives, loading guns and laying out rolls of duct tape and a tarp.

I’ve heard of Americans who are somehow unaware that New Mexico is a state. In the US.

MTG has at least one child and she seems very unhappy all the time.

Not even surprised at her projection.
