Marjorie Taylor Greene's transphobic tweet fuels hatred

This is precisely what she’s trying to do. A textbook example if Stochastic Terrorism.

If you realize you’re doing it, then fucking stop doing it. This is just more victim blaming, tone policing bullshit and it needs to end now. As has already been said, we’ve tried being nice. It didn’t work. Continuing to do so is just going to get more of us killed.

What’s a little forced detransitioning among friends, right? I’m sure we’d all feel so much better if we were “cured.” :rage:

I’m gonna pass on that

I was going to make a gallows humour joke, but my view of things right now is Black 3.0 so I decided against it.

How do you “win” an ideological war on your existence largely carried out via laws though? I don’t think those are the kind of wars that have “winners” so much as “beneficiaries.”

Her 7 day suspension didn’t last long.

And then she said this.

The problem is the time for restraint had long passed. Trans folks, and other queer folks, have tried doing the nice thing since the 1950s (Homophile movement iirc tried that, it became the feckless Log Cabin Republicans). It resulted in nothing good happening and it took the Stonewall Riots to finally push the issue. Even when we did tone it down post-Stonewall, there was little in the way of progress. Trying to appeal the humanity of an enemy that doesn’t care that you’re human (in fact, they relish in knowing that we are human, so their torture and murder is so much more sweet to their sadistic inclinations). It’s why pacifism only works when the other side cares to not look monstrous. The GOP and their reactionary allies don’t care if they look monstrous, they revel in being seen as monstrous since it gives them the veneer of power.

And actually, one of the most in your face aspects of the LGBQT+ movements that managed to get changed was ACT-UP, who were incredibly confrontational - die ins, stopping traffic, throwing ashes on the law of the white house of their dead friends, etc, etc… It got movement on dealing with the AIDS crisis and helped to move the needle on rights for the LGBQT+ community in general.

And then to turn around and cast aspersions, even knowing it will get flagged; the sheer fucking nerve.

You’re a good person who actually cares about other people, even if their problems don’t affect you personally, Mindy; that’s more than can be said for a lot of people here who constantly show us that they only care about themselves.

And a coward.

Indeed, the Nazis started out with trans and gay people, and then they kept expanding the list of ‘undesirables’ to everyone else.

History must NOT be repeated this time.

But see, I’m not polite enough, so… /s

Re: Language and tone vs the right

The Trans community is just the most recent target that the right has focused on, but the playbook is more or less the same.

They will attack with threats and hyperbole. People are used to hyperbole, especially in politics, and feel most of it is over blown (including some of the people targeted). But when the right gets some actual power, they start passing laws targeting the group. Individuals feel emboldened to commit targeted attacks. When this happens there is a scramble. You will find adjacent groups or part of the groups themselves try to separate themselves as “one of the good ones”, or exclude the group being attacked. (Such as the small LGB groups trying to excise the TQ+.) You will see the group attacked circle the wagons and begin to mount a broad spectrum defense - everything from protests to speeches and writing to physical defensive measures. Any aggressive posturing that one won’t be made a victim is instantly used by the right as the reason that they DO need to crack down on this group.

It is a Catch 22. You don’t mount a defense or fight back, you get bullied and pushed around and controlled or worse. You do attempt to mount a defense and it will be twisted into, “See! See! They are the dangerous ones!” It has happened time and time again.

It’s bullshit. You can’t politely refuse to stop existing. You can’t perfectly word your position to the point that they will suddenly find mutual respect for you. Everyone has a right to exist and self defense and they don’t have to be polite about it when people are literally calling for their eradication and outlawing their existence.

More firearms and maintaining the status quo of non-regulation will NOT solve this problem.

It would be nice to build a society where they didn’t have to constantly feel threatened too, but hey.

I could take such a sentiment at face value if only I didnt already know that some folks value their lethal weapons above and beyond everything and everyone else.

Guns are making bad situations into worse situations again and again and again and again. This is the real unvarnished undisputable fact of the matter at the heart of the question of “why are so damned many schoolchildren being massacred by guns?” Do not trust people who try to sell you their addictions as a cure for your ills.
