Megalophobia

Slightly off topic, but: the whole “twist” of Melancholia was completely erroneous. That is, there’s a near-miss flyby of a mass many times larger than Earth. It passes safely by: everyone’s shook but ok. Then “the scientists” figure out that Earth’s gravitation is going to capture it and its going to crash into Earth anyway.

Except: anything close to Earth-sized (let alone the multiple Earths that it is) is going to massively, catastrophically, change Earth’s orbit itself, with unimaginable earthquakes/tsunamis. And, with Earth being the smaller mass, it’s Earth who is captured by, and crashes into, the large mass, not vice versa.

It’s comforting interesting to finally have a word for something that was haunting me when I was a teenager. (The bad weed didn’t help, I guess.) I used to dream about abstract big things. Like a mile high gymnastics ball that chases me, Indy boulder style.

Also, in recent news, I experienced numeric-financial megalophobia (or: Meg-phobia) when they caught this poor tuna. The math was something like $3000 per kg, and this fish is around a metric ton. Multishudder.

Uncanny valley? Meh. Never been an issue. But driving along in the dark and seeing something looming in the darkness? Yikes. Even when I find out it was just an unlit billboard or a piece of weirdly-shaped farm equipment, the sense of dread stays with me a while.

A little off tangent, but it’s funny how these things work out.

Theres a name for it that i cannot recall right now, but i get very severe vertigo in GTA (3/4?) in the area theres a sunken large boat visible under the sea.

This is someone happy to lean over a cliff edge holding onto something with just one hand to see how high i am without issue, but that wreck terrifies me to the core for no real reason. It’s very interesting

I had a similar pic with the Cosmosphere’s SR-71 was brought into town. But I can’t find that pic. Here is a pic of it being placed on the pedestals (pylons?). The museum housing was built AROUND it.

I once saw the outline of a giant black pig strolling across the town lights of Albuquerque but I had a van full of hippies and they didn’t want to stop.

See post about size of Jupiter relative to its moons.

Me: I wish could live on one of them

This subreddit is not for me.

And with the gate at the end of the complex

It’s the biggest Player flyable ship in the game, and you can really feel it when that tail snags on everything.

That rover is about the size of a chevy suburban. Except a bit taller. And the wheels are much wider of course.

Not exactly Jupiter, but the ship is the size of a house.

Elite Dangerous is basically the killer app for VR.

giant mouth

That is exactly what I thought about. I parked my full size 4x4 truck next to it for a photo op. My truck did not reach the top of the treads!
