It’s interesting how the Obamas really are these sort of generic “celebrities” now, in a way that wasn’t true of any former First Couples. I can see how Obama inspired Trump to run in more than one way - they have exactly what he’s always coveted, this acceptance into the social world of famous actors, athletes & musicians. Ironically Trump had more of that before he ran - he was a hanger-on largely viewed with disdain, but now he’s been entirely exiled from that world (except for a few right-wing cultural figures that themselves struggle to hold onto any cultural relevance). Trump wants to hang out with Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen, but instead he gets Kid Rock.
