…
That’s probably an understatement.
Seems like going door-to-door could be risky for her if she doesn’t know who will answer. Hopefully most of the people who furiously blamed her and her 1972 visit to Hanoi for single-handedly losing the Vietnam war have either passed on or are too old now to pose a serious threat.
Ann Arbor should be safe. That said, my U.S. history teacher in upper Michigan, who loved to intimidate and coerce students, taught that Jane Fonda shot at American helicopters in Vietnam (on camera) and to this day hasn’t had to pay for her crimes. So you’re not wrong.
I also had a nutjob of a High School teacher who harbored a huge resentment towards her. I don’t think he actually claimed that she fired the antiaircraft gun she was photographed with, though.
She could shake my hand and i wouldn’t recognize anyone (hey i at least know who she is!)
I have a few Jane Fonda stories, and I will share one about not recognizing her.
Years ago, I ran into her at Starbucks while working on a project. She had a giant wide phone and was covering her face, and seemed to make a point of trying to cover her face with her giant phone. I remember thinking it was a bit suspicious. I had no idea who she was until, when she picked up her coffee and had left, one of the workers says, “That was Jane Fonda!” They were tickled. A geezer of a customer next to me said, “she’s why we lost the war”. The hiding totally made sense. I was surprised that a celebrity was getting coffee in a small town, but shortly after, I spotted Rob Lowe, also hiding behind a phablet while waiting for an order. I would’t have noticed him, were he not hiding behind a big phone.
Long and short- I hadn’t thought about the performative act of hiding behind a phone, but it was about signaling that they just didn’t want to interact with people- and I get that.
I am glad she is doing foot work. It has to be stressful not knowing if she might run into someone who really dislikes her because she is politically active.
Additional context: Ann Arbor hasn’t had a declared Republican on city council or as mayor since the mid-90’s. Also, I can think of several neighborhoods in the city proper where crime of any sort just doesn’t exist.
Link to Twitter? sorry, won’t watch it. Please do better.
Huh. While I perfectly understand correlation does not imply causation, I still find that to be an interesting coincidence.
That was my first thought. I am an old, but even still, that was still technically before my time (my dad’s draft number was up, but Nixon ended the war and enabled me to be born), but some people sure know how to hold a grudge.
thank you!
I’ve been doing canvassing for the Michigan Democrats (in Ann Arbor) this year. They give a list of people’s doors to knock on that they think are either Democrat, or Democrat-leaning. Out of the 400 or so doors I’ve done, I think there have only been 3 that were up and said they were not interested in supporting the Democrats. (And they just said that. No other trouble.)
