This Christmas Island crab poulation are land crabs and they live off the vegetation.Despite its tropical location (250 miles south of Java) the jungle here is clear and you can easily walk through it, courtesy of the crabs. But there is something in that leaf litter that taints the meat. I’m told that if the local chickens should eat some crab that the off taste also goes through to taint the eggs. There is a very nice looking Blue crab (that is not as populace) also on the island. An American tourist told me they looked just like Blue land crabs that were fed in Florida and good eating.
