Milo Yiannopoulos speech at UC Berkeley canceled after campus protests

So you’re saying arson, vandalism and threat of violence are the only reason the protests were successful?

You’re not making as good a case for peaceful speech as you seem to think you are.

The non-violent protesters should not be equated with the handful of bad actors in their midst, which is what I thought you were doing. My mistake.

In your mind is the measure of a protest’s success the ability to interfere with the rights of others?
I’m saying arson, vandalism, and threat of violence were the reason the speech was shutdown. The original articles suggest nothing otherwise unless I missed something.

I did not intend to equate the two. I fully support the peaceful protesters who attack the ideas rather than their opponent’s ability to express said ideas.

I think a reasonable measure of success for a protest seeking to prevent a white nationalist from speaking on campus is whether or not said protest prevents said speaker from speaking on campus.

Nonviolent marches are my preferred approach but you do make a compelling case for arson.

Ayo, a Milo supporter shot somebody at a WA rally and the reason M-dog isn’t on twitter anymore is because he directed legions to harass an actress because she was in the new Ghostbusters movie.

I guess liberals are violent :confounded:

I think that respecting and ensuring the right of anyone to express their opinions is a better long term strategy for a healthy political environment rather than abandoning them the moment you feel another’s ideas may be a threat. I’m willing to accept everyone may not be in agreement with this point, though.

The dude incites people to violence. That’s not protected speech. He’s not expressing ideas. He’s whipping up then directing mobs. That’s not really political discourse.

He can still express those opinions. And the students of UC Berkeley have clearly expressed the opinion that they would like him to do so elsewhere.

I did try Google. And despite the rhetoric here, have been unable to find no such evidence.

There’s expressing opinion, and then there’s expressing opinion.

There’s expressing opinion, and then there’s singling out individuals for being trans, Muslim or from somewhere outside the US, or being a woman starring in the new Ghostbusters movie, and gently goading your followers to harass them. But hey the people listening to you are respecting a gay man, so they should feel good about the tolerance they’ve allowed into their heart.

Is it a radical opinion that universities should prioritize the safety of their students?

Exactly. The point of deplatforming Milo isn’t necessarily to silence him - but to be unified and protect each other from a madman. Fuck Milo, fuck his supporters (like anotherone who is JAQing off), fuck pundits, and fuck Trump.
