I don’t think Mississippi succeeding from the union is going to be in their own financial best interests. I mean if they want to go, who am I to argue with them?

This guy’s tweets really highlight Mississippi’s 46th-place ranking for public education.

he momentarily forgot that his path to power is based on performative public patriotism

I call on Mississippi to succeed, too. Failing that, they should secede.

They can’t even succeed when they ARE part of the Union.

This is a good time to remember that allowing Mississippi to leave the Union would mean that a whole lot of their most vulnerable and already-marginalized citizens would lose any protections they might otherwise have under the U.S. Constitution.

Which is also one of the key reasons that the Union had the moral high ground fighting the Civil War rather than letting the slavers part ways amicably.

This is just sad. I’ve avoided talking politics with Mississippi relatives for years and will continue to do so

There was a time when the Mississippi delta had really good public schools. It was of course a time when only a very small part of the population went to them. For example though, when most of the state was illiterate, all Greenville high school students were required to read both greek and latin. Some of my own family benefitted greatly from the terrific public education in the delta. My great grandparents moved to a tiny town in the delta because the good schools would give their kids a better life and it did

To me it is the American story. They completely cut off their noses to spite their own faces. Rather than see how beneficial education was and conclude that everyone should get it. Once everyone started going to them they destroyed the public schools.
(I left out the racist aspects of when and why, but I figured it was obvious)

Our state motto here in New Mexico is “Thank god for Mississippi! At least we’re not last…”

About 25 counties in Mississippi voted for Biden, mostly along the western border. Presumably, this genius state senator doesn’t represent any of those counties?

Aside, presumably, from the fact that Trump is running for re-election.

“Succeed” being Wallace’s Freudian Slip re Trump’s and GOP’s continuing “legal fee” scam.

Oh, they’ve improved?

I don’t think deleting the tweet or even apologizing for it mitigates the legal ramifications of fomenting rebellion against the United States. Right?

This. I admit that the idea of getting mississippi’s politics and politicians out of the way of the rest of us sounds attractive, but the abandoning of the people who would continue to suffer under that is a big problem.

This point needs more examination. I’m not any kind of USian law expert, but isn’t that pretty close to treason, coming from a member of Congress? Does 1A cover this? I get that it’s light treason* at most, but still.
