I think they didn’t have the courage at that moment to actually burn books. They didn’t even cite any particular book. They made threats about generic things. I think they did it because they consulted their lawyers and a 7-year-old child, who, very wisely, said that burning real books, offending real authors and real minorities could have serious consequences at this time.

The Agnes Nutter response might be a bit extreme when they haven’t even worked their way up to real books, but it would certainly stop them from moving on to people.
They explain it by believing and arguing (both covertly and overtly) that the only proper role for a woman is as a wife and mother.
