If you read Miles Davis’ autobiography, every other word is motherfucker, sometimes meaning good, sometimes bad, sometimes both, but most often neutral. Ornette Coleman, for example was a motherfucker who “just came in here and fucked everybody” with his new sound. None of which can tell you whether Miles liked the new sound or not (though he later says he did not).

Context is everything. :slightly_smiling_face:

BTW: In my mid-teens, I had a pair of pants like that (thin yellow/black stripes). I wore them just the once when a school friend told me that wearing yellow/black clothing was a “sign of retardation”. He was an… interesting fellow.

I love Monk. And I love that this writer has two posts, one of which is Monk-related, and the other of which is about Japanese backgrpund music for department stores, markets, etc. Keep up the good work!

Yes! Need to re-read “Miles” by Miles Davis.

Thanks for the insights and the reminder about the book!
