“Both parties are equally bad”, they said in 2016. “A buffoon like that can’t possibly win”, they said in 2016. “How much damage can he do with such strong institutional guardrails?”, they said in 2016.

And some of them are still saying that in 2024. Vote, because the MAGA party have made it clear they have worse in store.

I’m STILL hearing “both parties are equally bad,” and part of my brain/soul dies every time. Of course, it’s entirely possible that the people saying it never really gave a toss about abortion rights–or women in general–in the first place, and when they say that, it’s mostly code for “I shouldn’t have to pay taxes” and/or “I am one incoherent website visit away from fully becoming a sov citizen.”

Or they disagree with a Dems’ stance on a single hobbyhorse issue. Or because the Dems don’t live up to a purity test. I’ve seen both happen on this BBS with ammosexual and brocialist members who otherwise self-identify as liberals or progressives.

I’d like to think that “pregnancy crimes” being a thing again might get them past their false equivalency. However, the users in question have tended to be men of the sort you describe, who somehow believe that they won’t be affected by the revocation of women’s rights.

What a woman decides to do with her body isn’t really any of my business.
What is my business though is when the government (or anyone really) wants to deny basic human rights and body autonomy from people.

I keep thinking about how forced-birth advocates always were quick to reassure women that they wouldn’t be prosecuted for having an abortion. Such promises were always hollow - even in the absence of laws that directly criminalized women for having abortions, the laws would get warped to charge women anyways, and you have these kinds of prosecutions. Though even before the end of Roe v. Wade, this kind of shit happened all over the country (I recollect a woman in rural, conservative California being charged with this sort of “crime” a few years back), but infrequently and the charges usually didn’t stick. A door has definitely been opened wide for all sorts of newly invented “crimes” to be prosecuted.

Also, based on personal experience with my Trump-supporting aunt, it’s Republicans acknowledging that their party/Trump is totally fucked up, but trying to justify it. (Going hand-in-hand with “all politicians are corrupt” and “they’re all liars,” etc.) If they’re all the same, then there’s nothing wrong with supporting the criminal, rapist, compulsively lying, incompetent, fascist guy - it becomes just normal politics.
