I wonder, will we notice when he is replaced by A.I.?
Totally, it’s extra obvious when he was tone deaf enough that he spent a ton of money to do a real life version of Squid Game
I only just learned of this guy through this Sunday Times article. The piece is fairly fawning, and I should probably take that part with a grain of salt, but it did describe his process for rising to the top of the algorithm, and it did sound more scientific than what you’re describing.
After high school, he hooked up with a gang of similarly obsessed “lunatics” and planned out a program of study. He and his friends “did nothing but just hyperstudy what makes a good video, what makes a good thumbnail, what’s good pacing, how to go viral,” he told Rogan. “We’d do things like take a thousand thumbnails and see if there’s correlation to the brightness of the thumbnail to how many views it got. Videos that got over 10 million views, how often do they cut the camera angles? Things like that.”
Of course, because it’s self-reported and his team thinks they are being all sciencey. People see data and make changes based on that data and think it’s scientific or evidence-based, but isn’t. That’s a correlation dart-throwing cargo cult. Until you’ve established causality of your changes, gotten above the noise floor in your data, and isolated those changes from other variables then you don’t know shit.
I could link to a dozen YT channels that specialize in scientifically beating the algorithm. They all have two things in common- they all give the same advice and they’re all tiny. If they can’t replicate Mr Beast’s success using his exact methods, safe say it’s not the methods making Mr. Beast successful.
Once again, I do actually know what I’m talking about in this space.
It’s the money. People like money and his videos involve extravagant use of money.
Yes!
Just to pile on top of your excellent point:
These are all classic examples of survivorship bias. There’s a reason doing proper analyses and statistics requires study/training. It’s not intuitive and your brain really wants to find patterns. I have been working in data analysis for decades, and I still have to watch carefully for bias that can sneak into my own analyses.
For those not as familiar with survivorship bias.
This bias leads to successful people thinking they found the secret formula to sucess. And anyone who fails just didn’t work hard enough or follow their exact method. (Often discounting any luck or privledge that gave them the boost above noise.)
After all billionaires are just harder workers that wanted it more /s
Off-topic, but can I say, thank you for doing this. Far too often, I see people replying, especially to women here, with a post that seems like it’s attempting to talk over or mansplain the point that that woman just made, rather than contributing further information that others might find helpful. It’s very simply to “yes, and” people’s comments, so thanks for doing so!
Excuse me for being out of touch, but wtf is MrBeast?
Seems he is upset about his likeness being used in Ireland too.
Which one is he?
P.S. what has Ireland done to be so inflicted?
