When I read “Samurai Murder Defendant” I though you were going to link to the story about the Power Rangers actor who stabbed his roommate to death with a sword. He played the Red Ranger in Power Rangers Wild Force then played an evil character on Power Rangers Samurai, to tie it to the original post more closely.

Though to be fair he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, not murder.

Possible explanations:

a) He’s possessed by the ghost of a samurai
b) He’s reverting back to his past life as a samurai
c) He has multiple personalities, one of which is a samurai
d) He’s pretending to do one of the above in an attempt to appear insane and unfit for trial.
e) He’s an actual samurai, and that court has no bushido.

The old "If I seem cuh-raazy then they can’t convict me defense. I get how bad American prisons are, but I can’t imagine that the places Americans stick their people prone to murderous psychotic breaks are better.

or his favorite movie is The Last Samurai?

This sounds like something from one of John Belushi’s darker skits.

True story: I won an Oscar Party food competition where we had to make dishes named after movies. My dish: “Last Ham on Rye” was a platter of sandwiches.

But only one had ham.

It’s especially idiotic because when someone is ruled incompetent to stand trial, they are put in a state institution to medicate the shit out of them to bring them up to the level of assisting in their defense, and then put on trial. It’s not unlike what happened in Cuckoo’s Nest. Actual not guilty’s by reason of insanity are extremely rare, and require a hell of a lot more than acting goofy at trial.

Also, many states now have a “Guilty but mentally ill” type of verdict. You get put away in the mental hospital until you’re “treated” and then you go straight to prison.

He’s so insane, he remains calmly seated for the entire encounter.

He’s faking being a samurai?

“Eh, who needs Bushido when you have jurisdiction?”

Sometimes for longer than the sentencing guidelines for convicted defendants found competent to stand trial, as the institution can hold “patients” indefinitely.
