I’ve also heard ‘masterpiece’ used to mean the artists first piece of work recognised as being representative of the true quality they are capable of, rather than just meaning ‘really awesome’.

Actually… I needed that explained. I’m so used to Crosses as fashion I actually didn’t realize they were meant as a statement about Christianity itself.
It’s just a coincidence how often those two go together, right? No possibility that our social judgements are influenced by arbitrary standards of wealth, right? That’s why lobster is still dismissed as disgusting food for poor people, and why injection-molded plastic is still seen as the height of luxurious design.
