“Acting like a huge asshole is just what he does” is not actually a defense of asshollery.

I was following electric cars at the time of the AC Propulsion tzero, it’s weird to see such recent history completely forgotten already. I don’t know if it’s still the case but for a long time Tesla was more of a battery-subsidy-hoover than car company- libertarians have unfortunately forgotten that they used to hate him for that.

Neither the concept of “consistency” nor “hypocrisy” have any meaning when there is no memory, only the eternal “What’s in it for me right now?”

What could possibly go wrong?

That was the other company.

I beg to differ. I don’t like the guy but let’s not rewrite too much for the purposes of the Daily Hate.

Before Tesla EVs were seen as overpriced, ugly, useless cars with almost zero range and less utility. His plan was to start with luxury cars and work his way down the chain. That worked, and forced the other big car companies to start doing it too.

I don’t own a Tesla, but I do own an EV, and I have zero doubt that it wouldn’t exist if without Tesla having shaken up the market.

And you can still be an uber rich person working at doing good things without monetizing every step towards progress. Bill Gates comes to mind. Though I guess we all had to put up with Clippy every time it looked like we were writing a letter, which was a steep price.

It’s the whole general category of rich assholes trying to profit off space travel that’s the problem here… Whether it’s Musk, Bezos, or Branson, none of them should be exploiting space travel like this.

Putting up with Musk’s (and Bezo’s, etc) trolls are the price we pay for providing the environment in which they became and remain rich. I found Musk’s reply to Bernie more about productivity than anything else. Sanders has very laudable goals for reaching economic equality, but they aren’t going to happen in his lifetime because so long as the political parties insist on blocking each other’s goals, our legislative productivity will remain at zero. Meanwhile, Musk and the cult of engineers he has attracted are busy Getting Stuff Done - whether that is reusable rockets, electric cars, or internet anywhere. If I had those accomplishments on my resume, I might just feel like trolling a few of those unproductive elected officials myself.

SpaceX has serious public resources behind it too. It is working off government grants. Don’t let the PR fool you They are as private as Northrop Grumman was in making the lunar lander.

It’s not even a good threat. Tesla is such a heavily manipulated stock that it’s a very good thing more of his shares are sold off.

Yes. I’m aware he gets contracts. This is not the same as with NG who made goods FOR NASA…

NG didn’t try to pretend they were using their money for space exploration like SpaceX.

He doesn’t want to explore space - he wants to exploit it.

And use public money to do it. Resources and infrastructure he uses, but is too cheap to pay for their maintenance and upkeep.

Fuck supply side economy boosters. They’re parasites.

Socialise the risk. Privatise the profit. Claim all the credit. Spread all the blame.

I’m going to agree with you on this one. Tesla, the company, should be credited with making EVs desirable vehicles. Up until the Model S, EVs were dumpy cars based loosely on city cars and econoboxes. Tesla paved the way for more mainstream vehicles like the Ford Mach-E and Rivian R1T.

Where I get upset is when certain Musk fans act like he personally and individually accomplished that. He didn’t.
