@dan_smooth Hmm… Good point about the shaft material. If solid metal, that would suggest a tool meant for a downward application.
Looks like something used for pottery (compare here: http://www.dickblick.com/products/12-piece-basic-pottery-tool-set/). However, I have no clue what the black part would be.
It is also very similar to a tool that we’d carry on our trucks for pushing and pulling load chain around load items. You could put the chain through the loop and push it across to the other side or use the hooked end to snag the chain and pull it through. Ours was just welded steel rod though, no fancy dressing.
Good theory, but don’t you think that the fact that the white tape is not black with soot rules out any use in a chimney?
