Are there regional subtleties? Sure.
But it was not a word that was anywhere near being generally acceptable language in the UK.

Agreed; implying that the word somehow doesn’t have an offensive connotation outside of the US is highly inaccurate, at best.
If that were actually the case, then the walking Ken doll would not have been “reprimanded”* by the people who run the tv program…
*Whatever the hell that means.
