I’ve said it before: as with the dictators they so admire, the one thing that fascists and white supremacists and Nazis will not countenance is being laughed at.
It looks like that’s the case from the video. There are no swastika flags or other banned symbols, for example, which would have gotten them arrested on the spot. They’re goose-stepping a fine line there.
There have been German knuckleheads who think maybe Hitler’s ideas need another try since 1945. They’ve always been pushing right up to the legal limit. No swastikas, no salutes, no mention of Hitler, and a bunch of other things that are not allowed.
They’re still Nazis, everyone knows they’re Nazis. I believe, without proof, that the laws they obey remind everyone - Nazis and decent people alike - that these Nazis do not have political clout. Gotta keep the guard up; they still want awful things. But this helps make them look marginal, something that seemed to evaporate in the US around 2016 or so…
ETA: To be clear, Germany isn’t special for having knuckleheads. This cruelty is everywhere you find people. My favourite quote on the matter comes from an Australian WWII infantry veteran, who said “If a bunch of people as smart and decent and civilized as the Germans can fall for this nonsense, the rest of us had better watch out.”
TIL. That’s truly gross, and i suspect Norwegians might have something to say about it. Easy to see the innocent look on a Nazi face: “What? I love Norway! Why do you hate Norway?”
Unfortunately the right ruins every symbol they touch. After the Freedom Convoy nonsense here in Canada, you can’t really fly our flag on anything without likely virtue-signalling yourself as one of them. Canadians are not an overtly nationalistic bunch anyway so we don’t tend to go around waving them regardless, but now it’s extra loaded to do so. Hopefully that will blow over, but I wouldn’t put one on my house or truck right now lest I be mistaken for one of those queerphobic jackasses.
Do the backpacks of young travellers get a pass here? I hope so; that’s not meant to virtue-signal their fellow Canadians. Damn shame if that got lost.
Bolsonaro supporters co-opted the Brazilian flag, to the point where the left now sees a need to explicitly reclaim it.
Treiguer and his troupe started prancing through the streets wearing red cassocks – a colour associated with Lula and his Workers’ party. Amid a rousing rendition of Juízo Final, an anthem of hope and renewal by the late great samba composer Nelson Cavaquinho, the performers suddenly stripped off, revealing skimpy, glittery outfits in blue, green and yellow – the colours of the Brazilian flag which had become hijacked by the far-right in recent years.
“We’re reclaiming our colours, but it’s also about recovering our pride in being Brazilian, reclaiming our symbols and reclaiming democracy,” said the 30-year-old journalist. “Good things are coming, but it’s extremely important that we don’t forget, that we keep remembering and keep fighting.”
