New contraceptive for people with penises stops sperm swimming

I wonder if they could create a pill that’s a combination of this contraceptive and Viagra / Cialis / Sildenafil to make it more attractive for men to take?

Everyone can slow their roll on this being used on humans anytime soon (if ever). The mechanism is acute inhibition of adenlyl cyclase. This would have side effects in every organ of the body, and would never work as a daily prophylactic. The authors argue that it takes a long time before it would cause glaucoma, liver failure, and the other inevitable problems. But what’s the point of a contraceptive that is only safe if taken rarely? Condoms and vasectomies are both better options

that’s… disappointing. i kind of wondered when it said it suppressed the production of a protein. proteins seem to be needed for bodies to function. it sounded unlikely - even to this non-scientist - there was some protein used only for sperm production and absolutely nothing else

The protein in question is an enzyme that is used in signalling cascades to initiate changes througout the body (literally every organ). The drug is limited to the soluble form of the enzyme, meaning it would only effect changes occuring soon after the pill is taken. That doesn’t help though if you want a drug that could be taken regularly

I was going to say, “who is going to trust their partner with this?” and, yes, I was quite prepared to shift my comments over to the “Contraceptive Responsibility” thread. But that has been deleted and no longer exists. Long-term partners maybe, but not fly-by-nights.

It is not a protection against STDs, so the sensible answer is nobody.
