My take is that the visual fidelity is nice, but you’ll need to have a good TV or monitor to get the most out of the graphics. Besides that i can how more serious gamers might be inclined to get this because the extra horsepower means that competitive console games would run more consistently on it as far as frame rate goes. Something consoles typically struggle with.
Besides that i question what the expected market is for this. Hardcore competitive gamers is a pretty narrow audience to develop a whole console for.
But is it $800 good over buying the slightly older non-pro? what other games are exclusive to that platform?
I’ll stick with my boring 2017 vintage switch and my aging PC, thanks.
I remember attending the E3 expo when the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube were all released. They all felt like revolutionary leaps forward at the time and the excitement from fans and developers alike was off the charts. Halo! Ratchet and Clank! Super Smash Bros.! Plus you could use your game console as a DVD player now, how cool was that?
Now we’re at the point where a new console release is met with “after hours of testing I can say that this new console has some noticeable improvements over the previous generation.”
Yaaay.
PS5 exclusives have been on the small side the past 4 years. The only thing the Pro provides is better frame rate without sacrificing graphical fidelity on supported titles.
You’re probably better off with waiting for the next Switch and/or upgrading your graphics card and maybe adding more ram
That’s why this feels so pointless. Most things still come out on PS4, why do I need to bother with a better PS5, mine is already underutilized.
I used to get various consoles and play certain games and exclusives on particular consoles. I’ve realized i no longer have the mental bandwidth to be juggling all of this and exclusively use my PC now, ultimately most games end up on PC if you’re patient enough with exception of Nintendo games (unless you do emulation).
Then there’s Skyrim which is the other way around; I’m surprised that there’s no android port fo- Oh. Never Mind. At least it looks like there’s no direct port for iOS… yet. /silly
The actual question would be is it $800 good AND are you willing to fight scalpers for it, since they are only making 12,000 of them?
I can’t imagine this is a yes for most people.
And the improvements are now all just incremental increases in performance so that you can play the same types of games you were already playing with slightly less lag or higher fidelity. Nothing new or significantly different about the types of games or gameplay that these consoles enable. The last time I remember something like that happening was when the Nintendo Wii came out. The industry is long overdue for some serious innovations.
Sadly it’s still incredibly ugly and overdesigned. Say what you will about the current generation of Xbox. I appreciate its minimalistic design that doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.
4K images or 4K video might really sell this thing. But no. Couldn’t be bothered,
TTBOMK, it’s only the anniversary edition that’s limited, not the regular ones.
At least I can stack stuff on my xbox. The PS5, notsomuch. The stand of the PS5 also seriously, seriously sucks. I ended up getting some third party feet that slide on the side, it’s a whole lot more stable.
XBox might even be a bit too minimalistic. I named ours “Monolith”.
Why would the Playstation 5 Pro need to support proletarian 4k when the PS5 shipped with 8k* and 4k 120*?
(Quickly and quietly clarified to mean ‘hardware technically capable of driving an HMDI display at 8k if software support were to be added; not technically a lie’ I think that there was some hype cycle about 8k TVs that they were trying to align with; and once that died out because nobody cared except TV vendors huffing copium and looking for a reason that they aren’t a commodified market doomed to race to the bottom; roughly the same number of people cared about 8k playstation. At some point in the PS5 lifecycle that claim just disappeared from the box.)
