A good chunk of games are still PS4. This is way too early for the price.
I still like the Wii.
Sony is greedy.
This is why I always stay one generation behind on my game consoles. The games are still “new to me” but can be had at a fraction of the price.
Besides, it’s harder and harder to see the improvements from one generation to the next. The PS2 was a huge upgrade from the original PlayStation because it could play DVDs and had radically improved graphics. The PS3 was a big upgrade over the PS2 because it had Blu-Ray and HD and wireless controllers. The PS4 was a moderate upgrade from the PS3 because… slightly better graphics and bigger hard drive, I guess? I still haven’t seen any compelling reason to upgrade to the PS5.
And will have no physical media. So when it goes obsolete, its a brick as opposed to a “nostalgia toy”.
… “Pro” as in “professional”
Not “pro” as in “proletariat”?
I have to say as physical devices I think these look awful.
I have good news! There doesn’t seem to be a reason to buy this generation! There’s almost nothing worth playing that’s new. On Xbox or Playstation. The new releases are few and far between, and you must be online to play at all.
Everything I’ve played that’s been worth it is PC only, or the Console game I would play is on PC. The console makers have enshittified their market utterly and completely. And the video game industry as a whole ain’t much better.
edit: also, the big thing now is remakes of PS3/Xbox 360 games or whatever. My crew is eagerly awaiting the Dead Rising remaster that’s released (digitally only lol) tomorrow. The idea well runneth dry for this console generation.
Beyond the price of entry; the strongly implied de-emphasis of the optical drive seems likely to sting. Yes, for now, you can still buy one as an add-on(if you don’t mind the price of entry being $780); but that trajectory is not going to do the world’s supply of secondary market games any good at all; and historically that has been more or less the one bright spot in console game pricing. PC game resale is almost entirely dead; but PC game prices seem to be considerably less sticky than console game ones on the digital distribution side.
If you are looking for the cheapest possible way to play AAAs on day one none of that really matters; but if your tastes or patience range further than that the glorious diskless console future is likely to sting over and over.
I haven’t played any video games since the 1980’s (on a Sears Atari). I have only had Macs and only for music production.
I wanna play Cyberpunk - what hardware do I buy?

An Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7 with a fresh set of dermatrodes, next year’s most expensive Hosaka computer, a Sony monitor, and a dozen disks of corporate grade ice.
Or whatever you can scrape together, really. The street finds its own uses for things.
Cyberpunk 2077 runs on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, and Windows PC.
I’d avoid the last gen consoles (PS4 & Xbox One), since the game is no longer getting updates on those, and they don’t support the DLC. Aside from that, I’d get whatever suits your fancy.
I’d still choose the high end graphics card personally. Barring a malfunction it will last me quite awhile and I generally don’t have to worry about reverse compatibility.
AAA games being what they are ($70 gotcha games) I have zero fomo for Sony exclusives.
