From 2010 to June 24, 2019, CBP paid $6.4 billion to 1,123 outside vendors for an array of goods and services including vehicles, food, furniture, housekeeping, video recording equipment, and leasing, according to Sludge’s review of data from the Federal Procurement Data System. These payments have swiftly increased under the Trump administration. The biggest recipients are defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin and PAE Aviation and Technical Services. Other top vendors include information technology company Leidos, G4S Secure Solutions, advertising firm Ogilvy, which is owned by a British parent company, and consulting firms Deloitte and McKinsey & Company.

Several universities including Columbia University, University of Southern California, and Utah State University also received payments from CPB.

Major consumer companies have been profiting from CBP. The agency has bought software from Microsoft and photocopying equipment from Konica Minolta. It has used the services of AT&T and Comcast. Microsoft subsidiary LinkedIn got $20,700 from CBP in 2018 for information technology software.

Look into the history of Jewish WWI veterans in 1930’s Germany. They volunteered for service at higher rates than German Christians during the Great War; their patriotism did not save them from the fascists.

AMY GOODMAN: We’re broadcasting from Brownsville, Texas, ahead of a mass protest later today at the federal courthouse that’s right behind us, that’s calling on the Trump administration to end the “zero tolerance” policy, which has separated more than 2,000 children from their parents, who have been charged with a crime for crossing the border. In a minute, we’ll be joined by the person who helped draw attention to this crisis when she shared audio with ProPublica of some of the disappeared children in a CBP, a Customs and Border Protection, facility. The children are estimated to be between the ages of 4 and 10, and can be heard crying “Mami!” “Papi!” This is an excerpt. A warning: The audio is disturbing.

AMY GOODMAN: The person who made that recording asked not to be identified, for fear of retaliation. And they were able to share it with the help of our next guest, Jennifer Harbury, who is a human rights lawyer, well-known activist. She has lived here in the Rio Grande Valley for over 40 years, has been active in the response to the “zero tolerance” policy. Her husband, Efraín Bámaca Velásquez, was a Mayan comandante guerrilla in the highlands of Guatemala. He was disappeared after he was captured by the army in the 1980s. After a long campaign, what she found here was U.S. involvement in the cover-up of her husband’s murder and torture. We will talk about this in the show, in a post-show, which we’ll post online. And she works with people who are fleeing violence from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, and come here to the United States for political asylum.

One thing we must be careful about is to not look at this as “well, we didn’t do anything under Obama, so we can’t do anything now.”

Just because Obama et. al. did a better job of keeping it quiet (partly through the simple expedient of not declaring war on the mainstream media) doesn’t mean we get to look away now that Dunning-Kruger personified is in charge.

And it is we. Us. All of us, not just those from the United States. How many of us live in countries where our governments march in lockstep on foreign policy with the US, or are too scared to criticize the US? How many of us live in countries where we tut-tut the US but do jack shit to improve things in the world so there are less refugees? How many of us live in countries teetering on the edge of following the US off that cliff?

Silence is acceptance. Silence is tacit endorsement. Just because we’ve failed to do anything so far doesn’t mean we have to keep being silent.
