NYT Opinion columnist David Brooks issues a mea culpa after spending $50 on a glass of whiskey while decrying the "terrible economy"

Anyone buy his total bullshit about his post actually being a “joke”?

I thought not.

You mean he got caught on purpose?

I think he screwed up. Multiple times. Once when he thought we were actually dumber then we are (I admit, P.T. Barnum may have misguided him here). Once when he expensed the whole meal to his work (I assume!). Once again when he tried th whole “I’m sorry I got caught” apology.

Brooks. Uh huh. The guy who wrote… this:

de-paywalled because :fu: NYT: https://archive.ph/Xeyd5

… the guy who shows us his galaxy-brain thinking (I. Can’t. Even.) and guess what happens next:

TW: contains references to sexual predators

… and who gets this legit take-down–finally–here:

Of all the people who deserve a platform and have perspective, wit, insight, constructive criticism… why TF does this pathetic oaf still have any publishing platform, anywhere?

If he were really a smart guy, he should’ve ditched the food, ordered an extra shot, and STFU.

I mean he thinks he screwed up only because he got caught. He has a low opinion of everyone else’s intelligence and thought he’d get away with it.

he had said in his tweet/X/post that the $78 included tax and tip, so I estimated what the drink would cost.

Well done.

Food and beverage tax is 6.625% in NJ. What tip did you use for the calculation, out of curiosity?

I come out of professional services (coff decade at Accenture coff), we expensed our booze all the time. If it wasn’t outright allowed (taking the client out to get them liquored up, or a team building activity), there were many tips, tricks, and outright deceptions the seniors taught the new associates as they joined when they graduated college.

There is no doubt in my mind that this SOB has never paid for a meal in his life except when he’s in his own home, and even then, I’m sure he’d probably tried to find an angle to get the Grey Lady to pay for it.

I’m surprised no one has seized upon the hilarious “upper middle class journalist” part of the non-pology.

Googling around, he makes ~2mn a year and sold a house in 2014 for 4.5mn.

That’s rich.

Not .01% rich certainly, but far beyond the dreams of us 99%-ers.

It is that special Blue Ice that you get from aeroplanes.

Very much this. Far from apologising for his fabrication, the shitweasel is arguing that the discovery of his dishonesty actually makes his claim stronger.

And when I’m getting sticker shock, it’s like an inconvenience. When they’re getting sticker shock, it’s a disaster

It’s got to go somewhere, right?

Brooks: “Mmmm. Peaty.”
