To borrow a line from another 90ās band, it was the ādays of swine and roses.ā University was still mostly affordable, everyone that wanted a job could get a job (pretty much all were above minimum wage), and we werenāt at war with anyone when the decade ended. Times were good. Itās easy to see why some might want to keep the Dream of the 90ās alive.
@bcsizemo: I lament the lack of strong female vocalists today, but thereās really quite a bit of good music being made in this century so far. More than ever, you need to seek it out, as broadcast radio play is as stale as ever, but itās out there. I find new music that I like all the time on internet radio stations, my old faves are still cranking out good stuff, and as Iāve gotten older, Iāve become more amenable to genres I didnāt like as a youth. I think itās a great time to be a music fan, even a fan of ārock -n- roll,ā if thatās what you insist on calling it.
You speak truth. Minimum wage was $5.50, but I had jobs at $11/hr. Now minimum wage is $11/hr and no one pays more than thatā¦ and rent has quadrupled. Its bonkers.
Also I am old.
Preach it, sister. Who the fuck expected that shit? Itās most unfair.
I believe Iāve laid bare in this very thread just how damned old I am. Letās collectively yell at the kids to get off our lawn!
Also to be fair: I have always wanted to be my age currently: 43.
So the aging thing for me, is much easier it seems, than many of my friends.
(I was always very young looking for my age, so I always wanted to be āolderā so that people would ātake me seriouslyā - and they do now! Its lovely!)
Mostly I find the aging thing to be amusing. Also I get to say things like āOh this jacket? I got it in the 80s.ā
Not getting stopped & having to turn your pockets out for the cops on a regular basis is a bonus, yes. Being fatter with a sore back, less so
Hey, waddya know, weāre equally oldz. These shoes Iām wearing today? Doc Martins made in England, from the early 90ās.
::oldgalfistbump::
Liam Gallagher was the reactionary one in the 90s. Noel was happy to do other stuff with different bands at the time.
THE BACK!!
Why did no one warn us about the back! I had no idea that back pain was a thing that just happened to us all! Seriously! I used to work three jobs, on my feet, and then go dancing 5 nights a week - no back problems ever! But now if I stretch the wrong way while yawning in bed = twang - I canāt sit up for 72 hours!! WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SHIT!!
The rest of the aging stuff is fine by me.
(Also: theory - our metabolisms donāt slow down when we get older we just can afford to eat more now!)
Yup. Iāve crippled myself lying in bed reading a book, for fuckās sake. Tramadol knocks ten years off, mind.
Iām astonished he managed to pull his head out of his own ass long enough to say all those words.
My BF brought some back from India! Its OTC there! Sweet sweet nectar of the gods that!
@IronEdithKidd - i will never forgive myself for getting rid of my 8holes. I bought them in London for peteās sake! At the Doc store! In 1993!!! UGH! Why? Why did I get rid of them?
(I am however currently eyeing a pair of white three hole oxfords Docsā¦)
Not to make you all jelly, but I still have my 14-holes and my wing tips in addition to the Mary Janes Iām wearing today. I keep old stuff that isnāt broken.
Are you sure? ;p
I still have all my velvet vests. Remember those? LOL
Oh, lord, I think thereās still one hiding in the closet somewhere!
I donāt disagree with that, or what IronEdithKidd said above.
I just find it slightly ironic that the mid 90ās stuff was darker and had more anger to it than whatās mainstream todayā¦yet by all accounts life was easier 20 years ago than today.
Actually I listen to a lot of EDM, with Big Beat still being my favorite. At least The Prodigy hasnāt sold out or given up.
I wouldnāt really classify myself as the āGet Off My Lawnā old guy yet, I think Iām more like this:
And Iām to lazy to change my avatarā¦
I only get Dihydrocodeine.
It works well enough though, I have been known to misuse it when depressed because it is very effective at making me think that suicide isnāt such a good idea.
Shit, thatās bad. Opiates make me happier than anything, itās why I stay away from them (well, except for poppy season, but thatās mercifully brief up here).
If Thom Yorke shit into a light bulb and started blowing it like an empty beer bottle, it would still sound better than Oasis.
