Odd Stuff (Part 2)

Odd, but useful: an annual world-wide earthquake safety practice drill is coming up on the 21st.

Here’s the local page for the U.S. Midwest:

You can use the drop-down menu to find your own region and/or country’s site.

Here’s the page to see which countries are part of this (quite a lot, surprisingly):

I was half-expecting that it was still alive.

Living the dream!

Sorry for the article in Japanese, but this is good stuff. Background: In Japan, obscenity laws require that genitals be obscured, even in pornography.

Today, the cybercrime division of the Kyoto Prefectural Police arrested a 43 year-old man residing in Takasago, Hyogo on charges of for-profit copyright infringement and electronic transmission of obscene materials after he allegedly used advanced “TecoGAN” AI to remove the mosaic tiles from pornographic videos. He allegedly charged 2,300 Yen (about 20 bucks) per video, raking in 11M Yen (about 100k US) between December and August.

ETA: The suspect has admitted to the allegations against him.

@beschizza This just hit the local news here in Japan, but keep an eye out for articles in English. This belongs on the main page!

People have known that for centuries. Label a condition, get funds to study it, say the work is scientific while not following basic scientific principles, publish results that fit preconceived opinion, repeat until that view becomes “common knowledge,” and institutions profit from it. Lots of research about women, people of color, and poverty followed the same intentionally flawed path. :woman_shrugging:t4:

Yep-given a chance to make a medical problem a moral issue, America will always choose the latter. Poverty, inequality, being abused, being obese-all just your own damned fault. I especially noted the dismissal of the fact that some of the mice gained weight on the highly restricted calorie diet. Not too much letting the data lead the way there!

Don’t forget about drugs, alcohol or mental illness…

I have a feeling that it all ties back into the glorification of protestant work eithic, and then to white supremacy, but then it probably has much deeper roots than that.

Designed by the Hells Angel, Merry Prankster, and graphic artist Allan “Gut” Terk, a key figure in California counterculture in the 1960’s. Friends with Ken Kesey, he was the painter of the Pranksters’ “Further” bus in 1964 and designed the Acid Test Graduation posters. By 1967, through his work for the Dead, he was acclaimed in the Bay Area music scene for his t-shirt and poster art.

The provenance of this t-shirt is particularly unique given it comes from the collection of Dan Healy, an audio engineer who often worked with The Dead.

And the shirt looks to be in excellent condition, complete with a crispy 1960s Russell Southern Co. tag.”

No kidding, a friend of mine found a Triple H shirt from the 90s for like $.40 at a yard sale and sold it for like $120…

16th tier is city league level, and very low down that level too*, but 40-0 is still impressive.

* As far as I can see, there is no relegation from the Peterborough and District league division 5 because there is no lower league in the area

If this doesn’t end up being used for recruiting I’d be very surprised.

“ “I was the first one doing it and now everybody is doing it,” he said. “I’m not dragging Harry Styles, but… He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do. This is politics for me. This is my life.”

This part erases so much history.
