Well, yeah. I didn’t say he never returns to the US.
In the show, he marries a South Korean refugee. She is separated from her family and refuses to go to the states with Klinger until her family is found. Klinger chooses to stay behind after the armistice so that he can help his wife find her family. This is after spending the majority of the show trying unsuccessfully to get discharged through various schemes.
In AfterMASH, his wife and her family are successfully reunited, and he returns to Toledo with them. This sets up a pretty sad story arc where he’s ostracized by his family and friends for marrying a Korean and turns to crime to make ends meet.
Comedy, right?
