This is an April Fool’s article, but there is also a true story behind it.
Researchers at Tohoku University announced the results of a simulation showing that 100% of Japan’s population will have the same surname in the year 2531.
Right now, 1.53% of Japan’s population has the surname Sato (佐藤, sometimes romanized as Satoh or Satō), and this number is set to increase because Japanese law doesn’t allow spouses to have different surnames. This means that, through sheer probability, Satos will increase as more Satos marry non-Satos. Even though every Sato + non-Sato marriage will only have a 50% chance of resulting in a family of Satos, the math favors common names over uncommon names in the long run. Because it is the most common name now, it is bound to become more and more common.
Incidentally, the study that produced the simulation was commissioned by an NGO that supports changing the law to allow spouses to have separate surnames.
