Off-duty officer holds man at gunpoint over $1 package of mints

Please elaborate, because right now, all you do is negate.

I think people overestimate how much their own behavior determines police outcomes; I think it has more to do with surface appearances and whatever fantasy is playing out in the cop’s mind.

I agree, although I can’t 100% separate “behavior” from “appearance”. Ex: Black dude turns toward white cop and puts his hand into his pocket versus white dude who turns toward white cop and puts his hand into his pocket. In that scenario, which one is more likely to a result of being drawn on or shot? Granted, the white cop might see the black guy as a threat no matter what, but my example focuses on the outcome.

Yeah, good point, it’s a fuzzy matrix.

So it never occurred to Officer McRambo to say to the clerk, “Everything okay here?” if he thought something might be up? Pulling a gun seems like such a gross overreaction that all the other nuances kind of vanish for me. He pulled his fucking gun because he thought maybe someone swiped a thing of mints.

There’s no way you can blame the clerk for this.
He doesn’t know who this guy brandishing the gun is.
He is in an understandable stunned silence.

And I’m betting the cop is a complete rookie with little or no actual experience,
because simply flashing your badge would be enough in this situation.

“This is my badge, and this is my gun. One is for business, the other’s for fun.”

Man in a convenience store holding a gun. Customer in front of the man with a gun holding his hands up while the cashier stands quiet and kinda still. Can you imagine what might have happened if one of those so called “good guys with a gun” came upon this scene?!

The US public accepts that their government officials act like thugs, killing and maiming people without justification and consequences.

The “fuzz” matrix.

That’s more a you problem then a me problem. Give it a solid 30 seconds of thought and I’m sure you’ll figure it out.

I gave it 30 seconds and I figured it out, but I’ll spare you the result because I prefer to remain polite.
