I don’t think it’s really a “language” issue for the Republicans. They’ve tried demonizing women who seek abortions as murderers and tried framing the women as victims who have been misled about the dangers of the procedures. They’ve voiced opposition to abortion in terms of religious belief, pseudoscience, civic duty, and economics. They’ve tried wooing white supremacists with fears of becoming a minority and tried wooing minorities by equating abortion to eugenics and genocide. None of those approaches have seen widespread success.
So it’s not the Republicans’ messaging that makes restrictions of reproductive rights so unpopular. It’s the policies themselves.
It can be many things, of course. I was just talking specifically about how they never seem to figure out that yelling about people wanting to be irresponsible and black men wanting to avoid paying for their kids and that America is falling into sin and all that is clearly turning people off listening to them about anything but they just keep doubling down. Not the only problem with their argument, but the one that shines through the day after they lose another vote and they go wild on social media.
I’m struck by Ohioan scumbag Vivek Ramiswami’s interview on CNN last night. He was thrilled about the Dobbs decision because he’s a “10th amendment absolutist” and then said how he voted against legalizing marijuana in Ohio because it is inconsistent with federal law. Huh?
The election is a year away and people who answer their land lines or cell phone calls from unknown numbers are furious at Biden because inflation is high or some bullshit. Not to mention the silly “Harris is such an unpopular VP” handwringing. Yeah these polls are just meaningless news cycle fodder. It’s more fun to say how awful Biden is rather than talk about the good things he’s done.
That’s just a dumb strategy if true. “Conservative” media will shred him for anything he does no matter what it is because that’s just the world we live in.
They’ve had what feels like very poor communications for a long time. However, in the last couple of months, they’ve become very active on social media. Didn’t they hire a new social media person in the last six months ish?
Actual news reporting has largely ignored most of it still. It’s not great for the horse race style reporting. It doesn’t fit the story that we’re about to have a recession any day now. It’s not sensational like the other guy stories. Just plain getting things done mostly.
While there’s some things I still wish they would do better, when someone takes the time and actually goes through a list of accomplishments, the term has been quite impressive.
I mean, it’s not hundreds of days of golf impressive. More of a “doing the job you expect” impressive. Nobody wants to report that, it would never generate enough clicks and eyeballs.
“Doing your job” should not be an excessively exciting description of his performance, but considering his predecessor, it’s a huge step up. In fairness, I did not expect him to govern anywhere near as progressively as he has, so there is that.
Buttigieg has a lot of good points, but he needs to get his act together on the climate emergency before he’ll have any real chance at attracting younger voters down the line.
Surely we can do better than that. I like O’Roarke, but he’s so far failed to do one important thing: win anything other than a local election. Buttigieg is good for the occasional zinger, but I’m not convinced he’s actually progressive.
Well, I’ve been told over and over that trying to persuade people to change their ways and thoughts is useless and stupid-and what I’m saying is that if these guys need to be persuaded to help save this country from becoming a fascist helhole they have more problems than I can solve. If they can’t see the crisis and act accordingly, they are ego-driven and immature. They won’t even take possession of their own actions-they only wanted to be able to vote for the guy the wanted, even when that wasn’t possible. It was the other candidate’s fault for not being their guy! They were only staying home on principle, because it was their guy or no guy. They did not care that that choice has led to the shit-pile we now need to dig our way out of. If watching politics for the last four years hasn’t managed to get them to a point of action, i hope something will over the next year.
