On the merits of creating freedom by forcing people to stay home on Sunday

Reflect upon the cartoon you are using to advocate not giving a rest day on Sunday. Ask yourself, do you stand with your brothers and sisters, and demand no work on Sunday? Or, do you stand with the management of McDonalds, Starbucks and Walmart?

It’s a sandwich shop, not a nursing station. We’ve really lost our perspective what an essential service is.

Close businesses on Sunday, give people a day off.

Nurses and other people on call would be happy if everyone had Sunday off, and if it was strictly enforced.

Dude, I’m sorry your boss made you come in one weekend, but there really is more to the situation than that.

Endlessly repeating your call for new laws to dictate how people lead their lives while ignoring the many counterpoints against said position is not a good faith argument.

I expect you will be getting some time off from the forum very soon.

Yes you can. You can do all of these things and still have a day, Sunday, when nobody works.

If you want to discuss the merits of forcefully making everyone stay home start a new thread for it.

Paging @DukeTrout or anyone else who can splinter this off.

It’s a good idea but the problem remains. If everyone is not given the same day off, it’s a bit of a rip off. You really can’t get together in large groups of people to do things.

In the last 50 years participation in groups has significantly dropped off. Social isolation has greatly increased, the CDC is calling it virtually an epidemic.

Think about it like this, say you wanted to be part of an orchestra. With two dozen people, it would be almost impossible for everyone to have the same day off for practice once a week.

Also, orchestras are dying. As are all group activities.

Yes a 4 day work week. But with Sunday off for everyone.

I’m sure that Xtianists like Mike “Moses” Johnson would take advantage of such a mandate to further mandate that everyone go to church (clergy would be given a special exception to work Sundays).

Get together and do what, exactly? Not going to movies, not going to a restaurant, not going to the beach, those are all closed.

Look… GIVING EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN AMERICA THE SAME DAY OFF DOES NOT WORK, for a number of reasons, all given to you in this thread.

It makes more sense to regulate the length of the work week and work day (as is done in places like France).

The issue of social isolation isn’t just due to overwork, there are many other factors (like people not living in walkable communities, less public space, loss of third spaces, the lack of TIME due to long work weeks, the shift to socializing online, etc). It’s not just that people have to work on Sundays. that’s just an absurd and easily disprovable argument.

FORCING everyone to only take one specific day off a week, that doesn’t now allow for differences in circumstances, isn’t going to do what you want it to do. It’s going to punish some people in a variety of ways (again, go read through the push back you’ve gotten).

Stop; you’re being far too logical and pragmatic.

Germany does not allow Sunday shopping. If you want all those things, you need to ban shopping on Sunday.
