Ongoing coronavirus happenings

I wonder if we could convince Trump that building Hospitals was a top priority if we let him put his name on them in giant tacky gold letters.

As far as I understood the article, they created some artificial proteins similar to those of the virus, the so-called spike proteins, and they will use it in order to boost the body defenses.

They hope that this technique will not only fight coronavirus, but also other emerging diseases.

The research financed by Fapesp (a state research promotion agency) uses a different strategy from the pharmaceutical industry and other teams from abroad. Goal is to start animal testing in the coming months

How did they know if there was Coronavirus or not when they weren’t testing for it until recently?

Ontario’s current numbers:

Total number of patients approved for COVID-19 testing to date 11171

It’s only in the last week that the entire United States has passed that number. (It is ramping up fast. It had better.)

West Virginia 0 84

I doubt it was that much higher than 84 tests when they found their first, and it certainly won’t be their last.

Yup and this was mentioned in the article - 87 tests for 2m population is pretty much nothing.

Wow. What a bunch of heroes, listening to the scientists, what? Like 6 weeks after this was already a problem?

Such a showing of leadership from the trump admin.

Yeah McConnell is such a liar, I doubt he even remembers how to pass a bill in the first place if his rate of legislation is anything to go off of.

My genuine fear is that Trump and the GOP will leverage off any level of success here and push for less FDA oversight for ANYTHING in the future. That should make Big Pharma happy
and enough to shell out even more lobby-bucks.

Yeah, it’d be a hayday for woowoo bullshit.

More alex jones types selling colloidal silver to turn people blue and cure anything they care to claim.

Normalization of corruption is what they want. Puts honest people (who they see as chumps) at a disadvantage.

I wouldn’t bet on that. Big Pharma likes a high bar for drug approval. A high barrier to entry means less competition from small companies. The big companies are already optimized to work in the existing regulatory environment.

The U.K. government emergency powers bill that will become law by the end of the month
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-bill-what-it-will-do/what-the-coronavirus-bill-will-do

Little treats include that

  • local elections to be postponed until 2021
  • power to order the closure of educational institutions and child care
  • now only one doctor (not two) will be required to put a person on a psyc-hold
  • Funeral directors (not just doctors or coroners) will be able to register deaths

nobody but nobody would want to pay the necessary hazard pay and over time costs for grocery store, trucker, and warehouse workers right now. it’d basically be price gouging.

it’s why sick leave, child care, and health care have to part of the social contact.

preaching to the choir i know. don’t expect this crisis to change american’s view of people getting “free stuff” by all that much. ( even biden is out there saying “italy has national health insurance and it didn’t help them.” the jerk. )

“The bad news is that several of you will keel over from covid-19 and many more will get violently ill. The good news is that none of you will be killed by hijackers armed with toenail clippers and too much shampoo.” /s

Security theater has gone from a tick on the American body politic to an actual public health menace that gets people killed.
