I’ve been thinking about AIDS

Everybody in Generation X knows somebody who was cut down by AIDS

This is going to be like 50 times worse, and on top of that it’s going to happen 50 times as fast

That’s two 50s multiplied together

People don’t even know what to freak out about yet

Further to @tekna2007 , @DukeTrout, and @Mercenary_Garage above:

I’m reviewing the material and making an inventory of the components I have on hand. Mrs. F’s lung function is terrible at the best of times.

Done-ski.

Per UK Imperial College COVID-19 Response Team:

[1] “… if nothing was done by governments and individuals and the pandemic remained uncontrolled, then 510,000 would die in Britain and 2.2 million in the United States over the course of the outbreak.

[2] If Britain and the United States pursued much more ambitious measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus, to slow but not necessarily stop epidemic over the coming few months, they could reduce mortality by half, to 260,000 people in the United Kingdom and 1.1 million in the United States.

[3] Finally, if the British government quickly went all-out to suppress viral spread — aiming to reverse epidemic growth and reduce the case load to a low level — then the number of dead in the country could drop to below 20,000. To do this, the researchers said, Britain would have to enforce social distancing for the entire population, isolate all cases, demand household quarantines of households where anyone is sick, and close all schools and universities — and do this not for weeks but for 12 to 18 months, until a vaccine is available.

How did NGLTF not cancel this?

It’s like they haven’t had any experience with communicable diseases in the community.

Addendum: The report to an extent appeared to be responsible for Trump’s turnabout on the severity of the situation here, per the article.

My take? The report emboldened remaining quasi-adults (otherwise evasive self-survivalists) in the room to approach Trump without having to piss their pants too much.

IANAD but I’ll just SPECULATE it’s a bad idea for me to try to intubate my loved ones myself

HOW MUCH do the world’s nation-states spend on “defense” every fucking day?

HOW MANY MONTHS have they already wasted by NOT spending those dollars on ICU machines?

Instead of crying about how nobody wants its shitty airplanes why is Boeing not making ventilators?

Because we want ventilators that are safe and work?

if they even just work most of the time that would be awesome

You’re not wrong. Under normal circumstances, no one would consider it. As a last resort though, with help rationed out of reach or just unavailable, it might be worth considering. So that’s what I’m doing- considering.

Why is the White House still talking about sending all Americans a $1000 check that most of us won’t be able to spend anyway instead of using that money to hire newly-unemployed contractors to build the temporary hospitals we’re about to need?

Is that a rhetorical question?
