Corona-19, -20, -21, whatever it takes.

I’m not sure that’s a good thing. Maybe if it would be used only for the UI and could be safely restarted, and critical functions were handled by a microcontroller with static RAM only, and no operating system. I wouldn’t dare to use Raspberry Pi to control a CNC machine, and modes of failure of a ventilator are incomparably more deadly. It doesn’t even have ECC RAM, so there’s no way of telling if memory got corrupted and it may cost someone their life.

The Republican Party?

The rule of thumb seems to be, “whatever the reported death count is, double it.”

And be prepared for it to actually be triple.

Finnish tabloid today. [Sorry for The horrible translation] “Experts ponder is the Swedish corona policy after all better?” I will not buy that rag and libraries are closed so I can’t read it but I hope the answer is NO.

Edit found that article for free:

Mostly about economics and stuff about old people not getting enough exercise and dying from that. It’s based on blog post by a Green exMP Osmo Soininvaara.
https://www.soininvaara.fi/2020/04/13/koronaviruksen-kanssa-on-vain-huonoja-ja-viela-huonompia-vaihtoehtoja/

I just skimmed through it.

Here in Poland media heavily criticize government for overreacting to pandemic and make arguments about economy, but in my opinion implementing restrictions (like closing schools) early enough was crucial to slowing down the outbreak.

WHAT?

Sorry to rant in a topic which could and should provide valuable and helpful info on the pandemic, but WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with those people, and WHY aren’t they in jail?

I ain’t no US citizen, nor do I claim to be an expert on anything related to the US, but I have the strong feeling that if the protesters had been black, they would probably have been shot for that.
Holy fuck. Blocking an ambulance (let alone a hospital entrance) is just plainly mad.
EDIT: lost it. @DukeTrout reminded me to edit that out. I had left it to stay transparent, but I apologise. Those people are arseholses. Fuck them.]

No, they are just extremely privileged and hateful. There’s no definition for that in DSM-5 (not that I glorify DSM, for obvious reasons). They do it because they know they’ll get away with it. It is like a child throwing a tantrum, but with pickup trucks and guns.
Some of the politicians can whip up hate and anger really well.

@74hc595, @vermes82, @d_r, and others:

Thanks for all your heads-up from other countries!

We have very vocal stakeholders here in Germany as well who argue “the economy, stupid”, and they will get more airtime. Yesterday, the first slight easing of policies was coordinated between the states and federal gouvernement. (Liberal federalism works, in mysterious ways, but it works for the moment.)

The prime minister of the state of the most populated state, North Rhine-Westphalia, tried to use his leverage on Easter Monday no less to “give people a perspective”, and sent out his minister of education to declare they would be reopening schools. He was on the daily Tagesthemen news broadcasting yesterday night, clearly in the defensive. I am livid about his communication, and to give some background: he is one of the candiates to replace Angela Merkel after her term has ended next year. He and others are trying to make use of the pandemic to sharpen their profile.

This is very low-level compared to what we see from in Hungary, what we hear from Poland. I don’t know about Norway, Sweden and Finland, but I expect politicians to take advantage of growing unease.

Re-occuring topic in regard to the pandemic: we must prevent a long term effect of isolationism, nationalism and, most importantly, political scapegoating especially in regard to vulnerable parts of society. I admit: I am very concerned. Even for the oh-so-stable Germany.

I apologise. I don’t want to minimise any mental illness.

This kind of behaviour has a heavy toll on my own mental well-being. I hope it will never come to a breakdown as bad as the idiot up-thread who brandished a gun at people because they apparently weren’t distancing enough. So far, I only shouted at the world in general here, I don’t even tell random strangers off on the street who endanger others. But I have the feeling I could be ever so close to loose my shit about something, at some point.

I’ll see myself out. Gotta home-office the shit out of this day. I managed to do nearly nine hours yesterday. Not sure if win.

I totally understand. I find it terrifying how quickly “cruelty is the point” people got empowered by DJT’s dogwhistling, and where, from historical perspective, it may lead to.

That’s a good idea, I’ll do the same

I love Raspberry Pis. but I think I’d hesitate to use one for a home thermostat – not without adding failsafes to it. And that’s an application where a couple minutes of downtime is no big deal.

For those who may need motivation to keep some form of excercise going:
