I get “403 Forbidden.” I’m way low now on exercise. What kind is best?
Powerful Antioxidant
Yan, the director of the Center for Skeletal Muscle Research at UVA’s Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center, compiled an in-depth review of existing medical research, including his own, looking at an antioxidant known as “extracellular superoxide dismutase” (EcSOD). This potent antioxidant hunts down harmful free radicals, protecting our tissues and helping to prevent disease. Our muscles naturally make EcSOD, secreting it into the circulation to allow binding to other vital organs, but its production is enhanced by cardiovascular exercise.
A decrease in the antioxidant is seen in several diseases, including acute lung disease, ischemic heart disease and kidney failure, Yan’s review shows. Lab research in mice suggests that blocking its production worsens heart problems, while increasing it has a beneficial effect. A decrease in EcSOD is also associated with chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis.
Research suggests that even a single session of exercise increases production of the antioxidant, prompting Yan to urge people to find ways to exercise even while maintaining social distancing. “We cannot live in isolation forever,” he said. “Regular exercise has far more health benefits than we know. The protection against this severe respiratory disease condition is just one of the many examples.”
This is a very brief summary, but in essence, aerobic exercise is good. Not exactly earth-shattering news, of course, but applicable to current situation.
One of the Mars rovers (Pathfinder) was controlled by an Intel 80C85 CPU running at 2MHZ, so computing power is not an problem. (I think a Pi Zero is even more powerful than the processsors in Spirit and Oppy.) Reliability of the overall system is more of an issue.
Thanks! Maybe I should cruise Craigslist for a stationary bike.
Hey, it helped keep Mark Watney alive (The Martian).
Excellent! So maybe the Trump Miracle Drug is working?

Starting today, wearing mask in public areas in Poland is mandatory. Improvised masks are fine too, as long as they cover nose and mouth.
Assholery engaged.
17 bodies in a single nursing home
It takes a virus.
That’s happening in Canada too. Too many nursing homes are owned by those third-party equity firms that cut corners for profit, especially staff salaries. So the people take extra jobs – at other nursing homes! A short sharp infection path between nursing homes, even if they had PPE, which they don’t.
In Ontario, it didn’t help that someone’s health care cuts chopped even the yearly inspections.
Your feeling is accurate.
I’m not an expert on local politics (since I hope to return home some day), but: the current PM in Norway is a Conservative, in a coalition government which prior to the pandemic was holding the narrowest of leads over the center-left coalition. Public support for her handling of the crisis is extremely high, and this has added considerably to her party’s margin, though mainly at the expense of her coalition partners.
Both the state aid measures (including dipping into the oil fund) and the infection control measures that have been imposed are considered to be way out of character for the Conservatives, and conservative economists are screaming that they will kill the economy if they go on much longer. However, the measures have been so popular that one local newspaper suggested everyone open their windows and clap for the authorities.
The shutdown here came early, and included the usual things like schools and public venues like theaters and museums, as well as quarantines for incoming travelers and some internal travel prohibitions, but many stores (and some restaurants) remain open and there are few prohibitions for being out in the streets, as long as proper social distancing is maintained. I occasionally go to a colleague’s house for a visit, this is completely acceptable according to government guidelines. This is much less stringent than some neighbors (eg Denmark), much more than Sweden.
Since the outbreak is considered “under control” (with an R0 under 0.7 and hospitalization below 75% of its peak and still falling), there was talk of opening the schools after Easter, but Oslo officials have balked at that and so there is still some debate.
I think it helps that none of the parties here is completely dominant; the Conservatives and Labour are both under 30%, so coalitions are always necessary, and it makes it hard to do anything too unpopular too quickly. I would have thought the German Federal system would have had the same effect, though I guess the fact that it is geographically based means you get some of the same stupid we have back in the US, where adjacent states have incompatible policies.
