Ongoing coronavirus happenings

These theories have been floating around a lot, and I’m very suspicious of them. Changing the inception date is critical to the administration’s “Blame Anyone Else” strategy, but simply doesn’t make any sense given what we know about the virus’ extreme transmissibility, nor apparently a lot of other factors that are now well-researched:

the interesting parts of the article are that they’ve identified three genetic variations of the virus, and that the one in wuhan was mostly not the one that’s closest to bats. also, that few to none of the original patients had direct contact with the market.

we know it can spread without symptoms, and that without testing, people who die of it might be categorized as having pneumonia.

it wouldn’t surprise me i guess if ultimately scientists do find it was around for a month or two elsewhere before it popped up and spread in wuhan.

while it doesn’t matter right now ( except to republicans, and we can pretty much assume whatever they say is deliberate fud ) understanding it origins eventually is probably good for epidemiology and science. also just for the sake of knowing.

[ edit : probably important to say there aren’t three “strengths” of the virus. just minor chromosome variations. ]

[ not evolution mind you. just evidence of god’s intelligent design. /s ]

It seems unlikely that someone would mistake them (c.f. doctors’ horrified reports on how bad cases go), though pneumonia has been implicated in some of the fatalities. But unless this strand is wildly less contagious, those added months should mean a titanic epidemic raging in the new putative origin point, not just now but months ago.

In my country the cases of severe pneumonia increased. According to this article, some doctors suspect that these cases were in fact coronavirus victims. But as we don’t have tests, we will never know.

The article roughly says:
In a month, Brazil has an increase of 2,239 deaths due to respiratory problems .

Number of deaths from respiratory failure and pneumonia increased in March after the low periods of January and February

Compared to the same period in 2019, this raises the suspicion that injuries from covid-19 are entering statistics for other diseases

all the science ive heard is that the strains are the same virus and the same level of contagious. ( not really strains even, just coding “mistakes” in some of the chromosomes. )

it can take several weeks or more to even present symptoms - so even a month before the first person died wouldn’t be surprising. and if a quarter to two thirds of people are asymptotic ( asymptomatic
oops ) that could push it back even further.

pretend some rural town got it first, and it worked its way from there. town by town to city. i could see it happening, even if right now that’s all pure fiction

You should read this:

Moreton makes the argument that this is a shift in labor patterns longer in the making, the feminization of the labor market to the kinds of service work done primarily by women up until recently. This pandemic seems to be highlighting this argument nicely.

Looks good thanks, I have online access to it so I’ll give it a read while I’m working!

Last recession we focused on all the building jobs lost and ignored the retail jobs. When these jobs came back (to some extent) they were zero hour and shitter than before. The construction jobs were high paying but retail saves families from poverty. The knock on effect, economic and social, of this devastation hasn’t even been fully experienced yet.
and now we’re here with the Waltons and Bezos richer than ever. All our local small shops are closed and everyone buys everything in Lidl etc.

Bethany Moreton is awesome
Let me know what you think!

Yep!

You know what’s weird, the first Lidl opened up in my area last year
Aldi’s already has a decent marketshare where I am (competing with American grocers, Kroger, publix, and of course Wal-mart and Target).

Gee thanks; as if things weren’t already depressing enough

I am pretty sure it was totally unintentional.

What would have been the pivotal event that caused this mess?
