Yup, cashiers are up there.

The figures Iā€™ve seen are that 13% of people infected need to be put on oxygen and that 5% need a ventilator.

Thatā€™s why I said you need to do the same for other people with a high risk, as far as I understand it we know quite well who these are. So even though we cannot identify all of them, there will be enough capacity in the hospital for those that were missed.

For that to happen weā€™d have to test daily those that come in contact with the people at risk, and given that the number of tests we an administer is limited, that might actually make a bigger difference than testing everyone - if, and only if we support those with a higher risk as good as we can.

The best numbers we have are from this Chinese study, which is roughly your numbers, but only looks at those who tested positively and/or were diagnosed with COVID-19. But that is only a fraction of the number of people who actually were infected. We donā€™t know how many these were in Wuhan (~10 Million people), estimates range from 2-4 times as much. Thatā€™s what Iā€™m talking about.

Of course itā€™s unacceptable that anyone is persecuted for speaking truth to power. This specific thing might then be more like what Manning and Assange are going through.

But I do notice some parallels between the response of the USA and the one in China, both governments attempted to make it look like they were in control when in fact they werenā€™t. However at the moment, China appears to have done things that work there, and the US is still struggling to get its act together.

A few minutes ago on the UK Channel 4 News (Which BTW is superb) they just announced that not even all healthcare people are going to be tested.

The UK approach to this is a horrorshow!

Yes. Importantly, as you mentioned, those are the best numbers we have.. That means, until we have better numbers, we should act and plan based on those numbers.

Sorry if this is a bother, but might there be a web site for this, or is it subscription only?

andā€¦ this is why more grocery stores should be worker or community owned. :smiley_cat:

the smallish store i work at continues to be swamped by customers, only now we arenā€™t getting our big warehouse deliveries. maybe monday. as big box stores run out, weā€™ve been getting phone calls like: ā€œdo you have groceries?ā€

the store works pretty closely with local farmers and local food producers - right now those are the only things weā€™re getting in.

weā€™re washing our hands like mad, cleaning surfaces til they gleam, have installed hand sanitizer dispensers for cashiers and customers.

doesnā€™t seem like thereā€™s much else to do. i imagine weā€™ll stay open as long as thereā€™s food to sell, and workers to sell it.

thanks @Faffenreffer!

I honestly donā€™t know. It used to be broadcast TV and now it comes in on some box thing. Iā€™ve never actually owned a TV myselfā€¦

Hang on and Iā€™ll see what I can find online.

(I dont work for Channel 4 News or anything, but itā€™s easily the best news show Iā€™ve ever seen)

I think 4od is not geoblocked anywhere (so not like the BBC player) and it has live TV and a huge archive. Most of itā€™s rubbish but there is also a load of great things ranging from 80s classics like a very British coup to Derry Girls from last year and loads of european crime drama.

Edit
According to the Internet you need VPN in the USA. Donā€™t know why it works in Ireland.

Still wrong. Some of the people in Washington had nothing in particular that put them in a high risk category - non smokers, no history of pneumonia, no hypertension.

My DH and I watched these animations several times last night.
We agreed the whole piece is highly illustrative.

I said something like ā€œprobably only the literate and numerate people are going to understand this.ā€
He agreed.

Truth!

Iā€™ll save starting the mirror and the light till tomorrow.

Its going to be a long isolation.

For the non-UK people in the thread, Channel 4 news is a good, high quality source for UK news. Itā€™s the ā€œseriousā€ version of ITN news, which provides broadcast news for the UKā€™s main commercial TV networks:

If the BBC is getting leaned on by the government of the day, c4N is a very useful source- they won awards for their coverage of the Iraq war, and they broke the Cambridge Analytica story on TV.

Didnā€™t Trump already explain that Ireland is ā€œbasically the U.K.ā€?
