The figures Iāve seen are that 13% of people infected need to be put on oxygen and that 5% need a ventilator.
Thatās why I said you need to do the same for other people with a high risk, as far as I understand it we know quite well who these are. So even though we cannot identify all of them, there will be enough capacity in the hospital for those that were missed.
For that to happen weād have to test daily those that come in contact with the people at risk, and given that the number of tests we an administer is limited, that might actually make a bigger difference than testing everyone - if, and only if we support those with a higher risk as good as we can.
The best numbers we have are from this Chinese study, which is roughly your numbers, but only looks at those who tested positively and/or were diagnosed with COVID-19. But that is only a fraction of the number of people who actually were infected. We donāt know how many these were in Wuhan (~10 Million people), estimates range from 2-4 times as much. Thatās what Iām talking about.
Of course itās unacceptable that anyone is persecuted for speaking truth to power. This specific thing might then be more like what Manning and Assange are going through.
But I do notice some parallels between the response of the USA and the one in China, both governments attempted to make it look like they were in control when in fact they werenāt. However at the moment, China appears to have done things that work there, and the US is still struggling to get its act together.
A few minutes ago on the UK Channel 4 News (Which BTW is superb) they just announced that not even all healthcare people are going to be tested.
The UK approach to this is a horrorshow!

Yes. Importantly, as you mentioned, those are the best numbers we have.. That means, until we have better numbers, we should act and plan based on those numbers.

Sorry if this is a bother, but might there be a web site for this, or is it subscription only?
It occurs to me that this has all been fantastic for grocery store owners , who suddenly canāt keep products on their shelves, but probably the most at-risk occupation right now has to be grocery store employees
andā¦ this is why more grocery stores should be worker or community owned.
the smallish store i work at continues to be swamped by customers, only now we arenāt getting our big warehouse deliveries. maybe monday. as big box stores run out, weāve been getting phone calls like: ādo you have groceries?ā
the store works pretty closely with local farmers and local food producers - right now those are the only things weāre getting in.
weāre washing our hands like mad, cleaning surfaces til they gleam, have installed hand sanitizer dispensers for cashiers and customers.
doesnāt seem like thereās much else to do. i imagine weāll stay open as long as thereās food to sell, and workers to sell it.

Be careful out there.
thanks @Faffenreffer!

I honestly donāt know. It used to be broadcast TV and now it comes in on some box thing. Iāve never actually owned a TV myselfā¦
Hang on and Iāll see what I can find online.
(I dont work for Channel 4 News or anything, but itās easily the best news show Iāve ever seen)

I think 4od is not geoblocked anywhere (so not like the BBC player) and it has live TV and a huge archive. Most of itās rubbish but there is also a load of great things ranging from 80s classics like a very British coup to Derry Girls from last year and loads of european crime drama.
Edit
According to the Internet you need VPN in the USA. Donāt know why it works in Ireland.

Still wrong. Some of the people in Washington had nothing in particular that put them in a high risk category - non smokers, no history of pneumonia, no hypertension.
Everybody knew him and his ideas, and yet they voted for him.
Sounds familiar.

You may need to follow the link to All 4.
Definitely free in the UK.
These simulations show how to flatten the coronavirus growth curve
My DH and I watched these animations several times last night.
We agreed the whole piece is highly illustrative.
I said something like āprobably only the literate and numerate people are going to understand this.ā
He agreed.
If only more people would see this, or believe If they did.
Truth!
I just turned on The Handmqiden (the Korean version of Sarah Watersā Fingersmith) right now.
Iāll save starting the mirror and the light till tomorrow.
Its going to be a long isolation.
For the non-UK people in the thread, Channel 4 news is a good, high quality source for UK news. Itās the āseriousā version of ITN news, which provides broadcast news for the UKās main commercial TV networks:
Independent Television News (ITN) is a UK-based television production company. It is made up of two divisions: Broadcast News and ITN Productions. ITN is based in London, with bureaux and offices in Beijing, Brussels, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, New York, Paris, Sydney and Washington DC. ITN produces the daily news programmes for ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 in the UK, and in recent years has diversified to produce a wide range of content including documentaries, sports, advertising and digital ...
If the BBC is getting leaned on by the government of the day, c4N is a very useful source- they won awards for their coverage of the Iraq war, and they broke the Cambridge Analytica story on TV.
Its going to be a long isolation.
Iām saving a Doctor Who season binge-watch for later.
