The hotel’s name was not released “to protect patient privacy and comply with HIPAA [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act] regulations,” officials said.
Did not know that releasing the name of the hotel would violate a patient’s HIPAA rights. You’d think it would be crucial to get the word out to people who stayed at the hotel and encourage them to get tested.
The outbreak is linked to a single-room occupancy hotel, a form of affordable housing meant for low- or minimal income residents, according to the city’s public information office.
Not exactly surprising, but man, this shit is scary.
Cholera does not get much press in the developed world because, well, most of us don’t have to deal with sewage on a regular basis. But man, it is bad. Like shitting out a liter of fluids every hour bad. Like tough to keep up without an IV bad. Fairly easily controlled by just not drinking water with shit in it, but in some areas that’s not always possible. And it’s worse in kids, who can lose 20 ml/kg/hr and once dry are an absolute bear to get an IV in, where that is even an option. Not a thing we need to play with, folks.
