Most slang is developed and used unironically or at least organically by its original demographic of users. “On fleek,” OTOH, seems to have originated as a practical joke, i.e. “what ridiculous stupid-sounding nonsense can I convince olds is the new thing kids are saying?”
In fairness, if you’re under 25 in this day and age and not born rich, what else do you have but making sure everyone slightly older than you feels rly square?
There is not anything to “have”. That represents a certain range of philosophies which not all subscribe to. To some people, everybody is born and die with nothing, with the time between being defined by what they do. Such as cultivating self-mastery, and developing mental and physical abilities. And even engaging in social relationships with other such people.
Someone I know once joined the Gay Pride march in Toronto (one of the largest in the world) and started chanting, “Sabo! Sabo! Sabo!”, got hundreds or thousands of other people chanting it, spray-painted it on some things.
Two years later, a friend of mine asked me, “Do you know what ‘Sabo’ is? I keep hearing about it.”
I swear if twitter was around in those days it would have actually been a thing. Of course, I have absolutely no idea what it would mean.
Fair enough. But I’m using it as shorthand for have going for them not have possession of. Admittedly, I thought that was obvious from the context, but maybe not. I agree, from nothing to nothing. One can “have” things other than material possessions or wealth. That represents a certain narrow use of language to which which not all subscribe.
For example, there’s the mutual having of a relationship or a child, which is obviously not a possession, yet is definitely a responsibility one has. The young can have opportunities open to them, which is what I was referring to in a world that has shortsightedly squandered their future and placed or guided them into crushing ecological, intellectual and financial debt to feed its own egoism and willful blindness.
Anyway, I suspect we’re more of like minds than you’re interpretation of my unclear comment would suggest. Cheers.
I did wonder when I was going to become old and now the question has been answered for me. So here I am, at the age of 29, already old. If it wasn’t for my frequent use of lol I might still be young.
