A friend gave me a pair of oven mitts made like that. I mainly use them when canning; I trust my grab more than the cheesy tongs I use to lift hot jars out of the canning bath.

For opening jars I use an old mouse pad; highly recommended. (For mousing I use a ThinkPad external keyboard with pencil-eraser mouse in the center. Can’t be bothered to reach elsewhere for a mouse.)
