On Leave it to Beaver, Beaver and Wally do all kinds of stuff on their own regularly, and it’s seen as perfectly normal for them to be gone all day without any supervision, and often their parents don’t even know where they’re going.
I walked home from school in Kindergarten and 1st grade (age 5, not 7 like it is today) in the 1970’s, to an empty house (I had a key) and it was completely normal.
