Pedantic Digressions

Ooops! Thanks. Sorry. Yes, Discourse.

I have a Discord tab open right next to this one, does that count as slightly less incorrect?

Yep. If the boat and your nose are pointing the same way, you’re paddling. If your nose is pointing to the back of the boat, you’re rowing. If you’re rowing a kayak, you’re sitting in it the wrong way.

Since this is the pedantry thread: you can theoretically row facing forwards, even if it’s not very effective. The real difference between rowing and paddling is that in rowing you use the boat as a pivot (via an oarlock, oarhole or thole pin) while in paddling the paddle is not touching the boat.

And because this is the pedantry thread, I will preempt anyone who asks about Venetian gondolieri: I would define their action as sculling, and sculling as a variety of rowing.

You fine people gave me

1 - Pedantry / Sitting facing forward
2 - Pedantry / facing forward / ineffective but rowing

I give you

3 - Pedantry / facing forward / efficiently rowing / going backwards

I suppose, if you fitted rowlocks to a kayak, due to its double-ended form, you could go backwards very efficiently
