32-bit CPU can even be emulated on an 8-bit one, albeit not very efficiently:

The Kinect was truly a technical marvel in search of a problem. A failed gamble but not useless. Really, truly, we have not seen the last of the fruits of that labor. The code is in the Hololens family of products to this day.
It is not hard to see how MSFT ended up making the call after how the Wii panned out.
Disclosure: My old boss at my last company was the PM for the Kinect on 360.
