The same is true in Irish. Madra (dog) has no known etymology. We also have words for animals such as the tree dog (squirrel), red dog (fox), and ocean dog (seal).

Dobharchú (Water-hound) for “otter” was a feature of the Cú Chulainn mythology.

The legend goes that a prediction was made that his career would begin and end with the killing of a hound. He got his name from the first feat: Cú Chulainn == “Cullan’s Dog”. And at the other end of his life, he had been gravely wounded by some enemies and was washing his wounds in a river when he noticed an otter drinking the bloody water. Annoyed, he killed it, then remembered that it was a water-hound, and realised that he was dying. His final act was to strap himself to a standing stone so he could die standing.

Oh, and you’ve got to love the Irish for ladybird: Bóín Dé “God’s Little Cow”.
